Many have experienced storm anxiety since the tornado outbreak of 2011. The panic can set in quickly – when the out-of-nowhere summer rain shower blocks your view of the road, as wind speeds pick up or your phone dings with the most recent weather alert.
It is normal to be worried, but here are a few ways to prevent stress and anxiety during these common weather events.
Preparation is the key to a more relaxed active weather day, even the forecast calls for flash flooding and high winds.
Have access to weather alerts
Whether that be your phone or a NOAA weather radio, be sure your device is charged or has fresh batteries. You can also keep a charge bank handy if you prefer to ride these storms out in your safe place. Knowing you will get an alert can ease the anticipation of any watches or warnings.
Have items ready
Limit any hindrances on response time by having yourself and any other household occupants ready. Have personal items in go-bags ready to pick up and get to a safe place if necessary. Wear the proper shoes and clothes.
Your go-bag is entirely based on what you and those within your household need. This can include chargers, daily medications, dog/cat food and so on. Having this ready before the storm approaches will keep you from worrying about these things when the storm has reached your yard.
Safety measures
The main goal of being aware is to be safe! Have helmets for every member of the household, first-aid kits and anything that will protect you in case of emergency.
Know where to take shelter
This can be at a local shelter, in your basement or in the center of the building or home on the lowest floor. The important part is knowing where this is for you and having your route planned.
Severe weather can be scary, though it doesn’t have to be stressful. Be safe and be aware!
