CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission at its May 21 meeting approved a range of grants, infrastructure projects and resolutions.

The commissioners congratulated Cullman County Animal Control Officers Johnny Jarrett and Cooper Harris for graduating from the police academy and thanked them for their service to the county.

The commission passed a resolution to lower the speed limit on County Road 1656 to 35 mph. It also approved a separate resolution about vacating County Road 270.

In a public hearing, Cullman Area Rural Transportation System (CARTS) Director Stephanie Childers presented the agency’s grant application for fiscal year 2027 through the Alabama Department of Transportation’s Section 5311 Rural Public Transportation Program. The commissioners approved the grant application and the local matching funds needed to keep CARTS running.

The commission also approved Resolution 2026-29 for a resurfacing and traffic striping project on County Road 222. This is part of a road project worth about $1 million, coordinated with ALDOT.

Other approved items included a $40,000 payment for ADA compliance at the Smith Lake Park Campground, a $2,600 tourism agreement for the Smith Lake Park Fourth of July Festival and a grant application for the Cullman Regional Airport.

Director Ben Harrison explained that the $279,000 grant for the airport would pay for taxiway seal coating and would need a local match of about $3,076, split between the county and city.
