City school board spotlights students

    CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Board of Education at its April 21 meeting recognized student award winners.  

    Cullman High School Junior Grayson Gay was recognized for recently being named a 2026 Alabama Public Television Young Hero. Gay is one of only three students to be named an APT Young Hero this year. See a separate feature on Gay at www.cullmantribune.com/2026/03/12/cullman-highs-grayson-gay-named-apt-2026-young-hero.  

    West Elementary sixth-grader Ava Hudson was named an Outstanding Student for her hard work, kindness and willingness to help others.  

    The board also thanked West Elementary Principal Dr. Page, who is retiring June 30, after 13 years at the school and 35 years in education. See a separate feature about Page at www.cullmantribune.com/2026/03/24/west-elementary-principal-dr-jay-page-set-to-retire-in-june.  

    Dr. Chad Shannon has been named principal of West Elementary School for the 2026–2027 school year. Nic Gragg, current assistant principal at East Elementary School, will transfer to Cullman Middle School in the same role, effective July 1, 2026

    This upcoming year will mark the final year of operation for West Elementary, as West and East Elementary Schools prepare to combine for the 2027–2028 school year to form Cullman Intermediate School. 

    In the financial report, officials said the district is in a stable position five months into the fiscal year. Revenues are at 82.7%, which is higher than expected, and expenses are under budget at 40.87%. The district has total assets of $16.2 million and a fund balance of $6.2 million. 

    Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff shared updates on construction projects and recent events like the district’s Special Olympics.  

    Officials also celebrated additional student and teacher achievements, including East Elementary Fifth-Grade Teacher Lacy Cameron being named one of 16 finalists (commonly known as the “Sweet 16”) for the prestigious 2026–2027 Alabama Teacher of the Year. See separate feature about Cameron at www.cullmantribune.com/2026/04/07/east-elementarys-lacy-cameron-named-alabama-teacher-of-the-year-sweet-16-finalist.  

    The next Cullman City Board of Education meeting will be held on May 19, at 5 p.m. at the central office.
