ULLMAN, Ala. – Mavens & Makers recently hosted a pretzel-making class, where instructor Anett Schlabach showed attendees how to make two kinds of pretzels: single servings and a larger braided style. She also taught the group how to make Obatzda, a classic German cheese spread that’s often served with pretzels.
Schlabach explained that the class shows how German pretzel styles use the same dough but are shaped and made in different ways. Anyone can join, even without baking experience, so the classes are open to beginners and seasoned home cooks alike.
Class sizes are intentionally kept small, usually with 8 to 12 people, so everyone gets a hands-on, interactive experience. You need to sign up ahead of time, and organizers suggest booking early since recent classes have filled up fast. Prices vary by class and instructor, but most cost between $50 and $100. Everyone gets to take home what they make.
Schlabach hosts cooking or baking classes at least twice a month, with the goal of sharing both her culinary skills and cultural heritage. “I just want to bring Cullman’s rich heritage kind of back alive,” she said. “I want to use my talents and my heritage and share it with other people who may have fond memories of the food they grew up with.”
Mavens & Makers Owner Ashlea Chance said the shop hosts many types of sessions, like sourdough baking, canning and demonstration dinners that feature different cuisines. She said the main goal is to create a friendly place where people can come together, learn new things and enjoy each other’s company.
