CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about phone scammers impersonating law enforcement officers, including CCSO personnel and members of the U.S. Marshals Service.
According to the CCSO, scammers are calling residents claiming they missed jury duty and now owe a fine. The callers threaten arrest if payment isn’t made immediately. Some scammers are even using legitimate phone numbers through spoofing to make the calls appear authentic.
The CCSO reminds the public that no law enforcement agency will ever request payment, fines or personal information over the phone. Residents are urged not to send money through Bitcoin, gift cards, wire transfers or any other unusual method.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediately and not engage with the caller. Those uncertain about a call’s legitimacy can contact the CCSO directly to verify. It can be reached at 256-734-0342.
The CCSO asks residents to share this information with family and friends, especially senior citizens, who are often targeted in such scams.
