HOLLY POND, Ala. – Members of the Holly Pond Volunteer Fire Department participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Challenge on Thursday, Sept. 11, in honor of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on Sept.11, 2001.

Fire Chief Mike Harrison said the stair climb started several years ago as a way to honor those who lost their lives and is the equivalent of climbing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

“There are several ways to participate in this challenge. High-rise buildings across the country make their buildings available for participants to use, and fitness centers allow participants to use their stair climbers to complete the challenge,” Harrison said. “This is the first year that Holly Pond Fire and Rescue has participated in the 9/11 stair climb.”

Harrison said they partnered with Anytime Fitness of Arab for the challenge.

“Three of our firefighters, Woodrow Brown, Michael Butler and Caleb Graves, as well as one of our fire cadets, Ty Harrison, competed in the challenge,” he said. “Ty Harrison had Anytime Fitness’ fastest time while wearing gear, climbing 110 floors in 34:56.  We are proud of all who participated in this challenge.“
