GOOD HOPE, Ala. – After dominating Fultondale on the road last week, the Good Hope Raiders were back home for another region game against Haleyville, and it was another fun night for the Raiders. Good Hope jumped out to a 42-0 lead before halftime and preserved the shutout with some younger players on the field in the second half.
Mason Drake scored on a 6-yard run to give the Raiders a quick, 7-0 lead in the first quarter and Good Hope recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to give the offense a short field. A few plays later, quarterback Parker Johnson hit Carter Rutherford through the air for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 14-0. Another touchdown pass from Johnson to Rutherford put the Raiders in front 21-0 on the next possession and midway through the second quarter, Drake punched one into the end zone from a yard out to give Good Hope a 28-0 advantage.
Drake got loose for a 75-yard touchdown run later in the second to make it a 35-0 game and Cody Stevens intercepted a Haleyville pass and returned it 50 yards for a Raider touchdown to give Good Hope a commanding, 42-0 lead at halftime.
The second half gave Good Hope’s coaching staff a good opportunity to get a lot of younger players some valuable playing time but the perhaps the most valuable experience of the night came when Conner Hastings hit the field with a raucous crowd at James W. Shabel Stadium behind him, putting the finishing touches on a 42-0 region win for the Raiders.
Good Hope (3-0) will be back home next week for another region matchup against Cordova.
