CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission on Aging will host its annual Senior Health Fair on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center. The free event is open to adults 55 and older and will feature health services, resources and plenty of opportunities to show off their groovy 70’s dance moves.
This year’s theme is inspired by the 1970s with a “Stayin’ Alive” mantra. “It’s going to be a very good time filled with groovy music from the 70s and just fun for anyone who attends,” said Stephanie Lawson, director of the Cullman County Commission on Aging. Guests are encouraged to dress in their best disco-era outfits for a “best dressed” contest, show off their 70’s dance moves and enter to win door prizes.
“The overall purpose of our Senior Health Fair is to have a day where their health is at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts,” said Lawson. “We are lucky to be able to work in a community with a lot of wonderful providers that can meet the needs of our seniors.”
Additionally, attendees will have access to health vendors, information about local services and on-site vaccines. “McSwain Pharmacy will also be on-site to give regular flu shots for those 65 and older in addition to other vaccines that folks might decide that they need,” Lawson explained. “There will also be providers there to talk about Medicare supplemental and drug plans that are available, as well as other agencies that have beneficial services.”
The event will also feature barbecue sandwiches for lunch from The Butcher’s Chuckwagon, along with shaved ice from Cha Cha’s Shaved Ice, sponsored by the North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments. Event sponsorship is provided by Cornerstone Caregiving and Hospice of North Alabama.
Lawson noted that the Senior Health Fair has been a staple event since the administration of Randall Shedd, with a brief pause during the pandemic. “Since September 2021, we have been going strong,” she said. “We hope that the services we provide and events we host will encourage our seniors to stay active. It inspires us every day to see the seniors in our community be active, make their health a priority and socialize with others to ensure they are doing all they can to support their well-being.”
