BREMEN, Ala. — Cold Springs High School’s Cheyenne Bishop will be a senior in August, and in this interview, she talked about her faith, starting with a couple of her favorite Bible verses that have changed her life.

“God means everything to me. If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. He has blessed me in so many ways, like giving me so many amazing friends and family members I have in my life and providing me with a great school and church family as well. He is like my father, my teacher, and my best friend wrapped up in one. I am eternally grateful for Him and everything He has done for me. He has given me something to live for. I think all people, Christian or not, realize that there is some greater reason for our lives. I found that reason when I found God. The reason I live is to worship God and share His love with others,” Cheyenne said. “One of my favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 16:33: ‘We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall’. This verse serves as a reminder to me that I may make my own decisions, but God decides my future. I need to put my trust in Him, because He knows what He is doing. Another one of my favorite Bible verses is John 3:30: ‘He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less’. This verse tells me that I need to strive to be more like Jesus. When people look at me, I want them to see God in me.”

Cheyenne wants to play a part in helping people of all ages find God. She watched one of her siblings make the best decision of her life and is so happy to see her little sister give her life to Jesus Christ.

“Helping others find God is the absolute most important thing to me. I don’t care if people remember the grades I made or the sports I played, but I want them to remember how I always tried to shine God’s light to everyone I came in contact with. As someone who has two younger siblings and three younger foster siblings, I realize how important it is for children to find God too. One of the happiest moments in my life was when I watched my little sister get baptized. It is amazing to see little kids sharing their love for God and shining their light for all to see,” Bishop said. “People always say that when you get baptized young, it’s not actually real, but that is absolutely not the case with my sister. She has a friend at school that doesn’t believe in God, and she’s constantly inviting her to church and reading the Bible to her. She brings her Bible to school every day, and she has encouraged others to do the same. She has even led Bible studies with her friends during their free time at school when they could’ve been playing games like everyone else,” Bishop said. “I’m supposed to be the one that she looks up to, being her older sister and all, but I look up to her just as much as she looks up to me. She is truly one of the strongest Christians I know, and I’m so grateful to have her as my sister.”

Cheyenne wants to be a role model for younger kids and she has some Godly role models of her own that she looks up to.

“It’s extremely important for me to be a good role model, especially since I’m around so many younger kids. People naturally look up to people who are older and follow that example, so I need to be constantly on guard, being the best person I can be in order to set that example for them. People also look up to Christians and expect them to live a certain way since they have been saved by Christ. It’s important for me to maintain that image to show others that God has truly saved me and that I’m living through Him and for Him,” she said. “My family and my friends have got to be my biggest role models. My family raised me in church, and they have taught me so much about God over the years. My friends are some of the strongest Christians I know. At the beginning of last year, me and my friend, Ally, were asked to lead First Priority at our school. We asked for help from our friends, and many of them stepped up. Even the ones who were not comfortable with public speaking still came to every meeting they could make it to and showed their support in that way. It’s truly incredible to be surrounded by so many Godly people.”

Cheyenne talked about a couple of her favorite mission trips that she was a part of.

“Leading First Priority has been such an awesome way to share my faith and step out of my comfort zone. I have never been one for public speaking, but when I was speaking for God, it was like there was no one around. It’s truly incredible how God can provide the comfort you need when you’re contributing to His kingdom. Another thing I enjoy helping with is the children’s ministry. I love helping my mom with the kids in the preschool class at church and helping my stepmom with kids in the nursery at her church. I’m also going to be working the nursery on my own some next month. I love kids, and it’s even better when I get the opportunity to share my faith with them.”

Being part of a foster family and helping countless kids has definitely helped Cheyenne and her family grow closer to God.

“Being part of a foster family has definitely helped me and my family grow closer to God. We have had to trust God throughout this whole process, and He has blessed our family in so many ways. We have gotten lucky enough to foster children who are from families that we know, and so when they go home, we still get to see them, which is rare in foster care. We have also had some kids that have never gone to church, and we were able to plant that seed in their lives. We have seen two kids get saved and baptized and have helped five kids reunite with their parents in just the span of a year. Being around all of these great kids and helping them during their journey is one of the best things I’ve ever experienced. We also may have the opportunity to adopt one of our current foster kids, and the thought that God is giving me another sibling is crazy. I never thought I would gain another sibling, and I’m absolutely ecstatic. God is so good.”

She shared some advice with anyone that is struggling when it comes to having a relationship with God.

“Get into the Word as much as possible. Join a small group or find a good group of friends that will feed your faith. I have been a part of two small groups this year, and they have really helped me step out of my comfort zone by making new friends and sharing my thoughts. These groups have also been a good way to hold me accountable, because I have to get into the Word every day to stay on track with the study. As for friends, find a few friends. It doesn’t have to be many friends that are willing to dive into the Bible with you, go to church with you, or pray over you when you need it. I have found an incredible group of friends that are always willing to go the extra mile for me, and that is really all you need,” she said. “I’m currently going through a book with a small group at my church, so I go through the devotion for the day, and I pray both before and after. It is always good to pray for understanding before you read the Bible, and to pray for the ability to apply what you have learned after you read the Bible.”

Cheyenne has learned a lot during her journey so far.

“God doesn’t expect me to be perfect. He just expects me to trust in Him. I always thought that when people said to ‘live like Jesus’, we had to be perfect like Him. What that saying actually means is that we should strive to be like Him, even though we can never be perfect. We just have to use Jesus as our example of how to live. He doesn’t want us to be sinless; He wants us to sin less.”
