WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point High School students recently competed in the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) National Scholastic Championship (NSC), June 7-8, in Rosemont, Illinois, placing second in their division.
“After winning the NAQT SSNCT National Championship in April, we finished off by placing second in the SS division of the PACE National Championship last month,” said West Point Scholars Bowl Coach Lee Henry said. “Add to that three back-to-back ASCA State Championships, and countless invitational, county and district championships, and I’d say these kids have earned their spot as the best, most successful team I’ve coached in my nearly 30 years.”
PACE Director of Communications Harry White said West Point qualified for the NSC in Illinois by winning a tournament hosted at Tusculum University and finishing with an undefeated 9-0 record against other local teams.
Henry congratulated his team and said that’s a wrap on not only the 2024-25 Quizbowl season, but also the career of the seniors on the team. He said it was very emotional watching them – especially team member (and Henry’s son) Brodie Henry – play their last game.
“Proud doesn’t begin to describe how I feel about these kids and this team,” Henry said. “It will be very hard to rebuild. But West Point can do it. We have the best kids around and I’m excited for the future, even as I am saddened by the bittersweetness of seeing the seniors move on. They are going to do great things. And I’ll always be there for them. Congratulations to them on a stellar career in a very under-appreciated academic activity. You changed the culture of our team forever and left an indelible mark on the game not only in Alabama, but around the nation.”
Henry finished by saying, “Thanks for giving this old coach the best years of his career; I love you all.”
