CULLMAN, Ala. – Jonathan Patrick Young, 44, of Cullman, faces elder abuse, terroristic threat and kidnapping charges following a domestic violence call Friday, Oct. 16, that ended with his surrender to police, according to the Cullman Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 10:50 a.m. near the 1700 block of Third Avenue Southwest, where they encountered an elderly man who had exited a residence with visible injuries, the CPD said.

Officers were told the man’s elderly wife and their son remained inside the home and that the son was armed.

A CPD negotiator established contact with Young, who confirmed he was armed and refused to leave the residence, according to the department.

Negotiators continued their efforts while officers and tactical personnel coordinated the response.

During negotiations, the CPD’s Tactical Unit safely removed the elderly woman from the home. She was placed in the care of Cullman EMS for medical evaluation and assistance.

    Police later coordinated Young’s surrender.

“Young exited the residence and surrendered to officers without incident,” the department said.

Young has been charged with second-degree elder abuse and neglect, first-degree making a terroristic threat and second-degree kidnapping, according to the CPD.

The response involved CPD patrol officers, investigators, negotiators and its Tactical Unit, along with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Cullman Fire Rescue, Cullman EMS and Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker.

The CPD also thanked the Cullman Power Board for its assistance and Chick-fil-A for providing meals to personnel involved in the response.

The department’s earlier public safety notices identified the area as Third Avenue Southeast near King Edward Street and asked people to stay away. Its subsequent press release placed the incident near the 1700 block of Third Avenue Southwest.

Investigators were continuing to process the scene and investigate, according to the release.

CPD said no additional information would be released at that time.

Young is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
