ARDMORE, Ala. – West Point took a 10-9 lead midway through the third quarter Friday night, but Ardmore answered in less than two minutes and held on for a 15-10 victory in Class 4A, Region 7 play.
The Warriors fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the region. Ardmore improved to 2-3 and 1-2, snapping a three-game losing streak.
West Point received the opening kickoff, but neither offense broke through until Ardmore scored a touchdown with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter. The Tigers missed the extra-point attempt and led 6-0.
Ayden Shoemaker gave West Point’s defense a lift late in the quarter when he recovered an Ardmore fumble. The takeaway helped the Warriors keep the deficit at 6 entering the second period.
West Point cut the margin to 6-3 with a field goal in the second quarter. Ardmore restored its 6-point advantage with a field goal in the final minute of the half and carried a 9-3 lead into the locker room.
The Warriors produced their best response near the midpoint of the third quarter. West Point reached the end zone and converted the extra point to take its first lead of the night, 10-9.
That lead lasted less than two minutes. Ardmore answered with a touchdown, but another failed conversion kept the Tigers’ advantage at 15-10.
West Point’s defense did not allow another point. Quarterback Max Patterson helped the Warriors mount a late fourth-quarter drive, but West Point could not finish the possession with the go-ahead score.
The 15 points were the fewest West Point has allowed this season after the Warriors surrendered at least 49 points in each of their previous three games.
West Point returns home Friday, Sept. 25, to face Good Hope at 7 p.m.
