CULLMAN, Ala. – To help kick off Oktoberfest, the Sacred Heart Altar Society is once again gearing up to offer their traditional German Dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 4-7 p.m. in the Family Life Center at the church.
This year, as in the past, the dinner will feature a menu of bratwurst, German potato salad, sauerkraut, green beans, applesauce, bread and a homemade dessert. Many of the recipes used have been passed down from generation to generation according to Pat Arentz, who heads up the dinner for the Altar Society.
“This German dinner brings together so many people from the parish who volunteer their time and talents to make it happen. From peeling potatoes for the potato salad to bringing dinners out for our drive through, people of all ages work together to make it a reality,” Arentz said.
The meat used in the dinner comes from Brickyard Meats in Cullman, which is owned by a family of Sacred Heart parishioners.
During the dinner, students from Sacred Heart School will have a table selling raffle tickets for their upcoming School German Festival on Oct. 3. The grand prize is $5,000 this year.
“We have a lot of people who drive through and take dinners home each year. I would encourage folks to dine in if they can. It feels like a big family picnic where you can go to catch up face to face with long lost relatives. There’s a lot of fellowship and fun at the dinner,” Arentz said.
Dinners are $15 a plate and are available for dining in or drive through/take out.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church is located at 112 Second Ave. SE in downtown Cullman.
