An upcoming project to improve U.S. Highway 31 at Lacon in Morgan County will divert traffic to I-65.
The $1.9 million project includes safety widening, concrete slab repairs and replacements, and paving an asphalt overlay. The project extends from the Cullman County line to Lacon Road.
The two-lane segment of U.S. Highway 31 north of I-65 Exit 318 to south of Lacon Trade Day will close to traffic Monday, May 4.
The contractor, Wiregrass Construction, plans to begin work that day, weather permitting. A subcontractor will begin installing project signs this week.
Road closures and detour
Northbound traffic will detour to I-65 at Exit 318 and southbound traffic will detour to I-65 at Exit 322 (County Road 55) in Falkville. Message boards and other signs will advise drivers of the closure and direct them to the detour route.
Additionally, Higdon Road, a local road will close at its intersection with U.S. Highway 31. On its other end, at Old Highway 31, it will remain open to local traffic but closed to through traffic.

Lane closures
Also, expect single-lane closures and lane shifts in the divided highway segments of the work zone north and south of the road closure. Please expect delays and plan additional travel time.
