CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman High School Jazz Band will celebrate a milestone with its 30th annual Big Band Dance on Friday, Feb. 6, from 7-9 p.m. at Loft 212.

The event will feature live music performed by the CHS Jazz Band, an audition-based ensemble made up of students in grades nine through 12. The group specializes in jazz, blues, Latin and contemporary styles.

For three decades, the Big Band Dance has brought students, families and community members together for an evening centered on live music and tradition. Unlike most school dances, the event is open to all ages, welcoming middle school students, high school students and adults to enjoy the performance together.

The jazz band typically includes 18 to 23 students and emphasizes improvisation and a wide range of musical styles. Selections will include classic big band pieces inspired by The Glenn Miller Orchestra and The Duke Ellington Orchestra, along with Latin and blues selections.

The event also offers an opportunity for former band members and alumni to reconnect. Former Cullman band student Katherine Clark said the Big Band Dance stood out from other school dances because of its atmosphere and music.

“It was always more elegant and classy than a typical teenage dance,” Clark said. “It gave you a chance to dress up, go out with your friends or a date and still be in a nice, respectful environment. The band always put a lot of care and effort into the music, and you could really feel that.”

Clark said one of her favorite memories was watching an older couple who attended the dance each year and regularly took to the floor together, becoming a familiar and beloved sight for students.

Admission is $10 per person, with proceeds supporting the Cullman High School Jazz Band. Loft 212 is located at 212 Fourth St. SW, Cullman.
