CULLMAN, Ala. – The communitywide Nerf War returned for the second year this past Saturday, June 14. Organized by Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism, the event welcomed nearly 100 participants at the newly opened OmniPlex, almost doubling the turnout from last year. What began as a small idea spotted on social media has turned into one of Cullman’s most popular summer events.

“We had about 50 people last year, which I thought was an incredible turnout,” said CPRST Programs Coordinator Jamie Kirk. “This year, we had enough players to fill 96 jerseys, and they’re all gone!”

The Nerf War is suitable for children and adults of all ages, offering parents and children an opportunity to participate in friendly competition while spending quality time together. Players could participate in games like “Last Man Standing” and “Capture the Flag,” which help players strategize and work together. To ensure everyone’s safety, the event was held indoors this year to avoid the heat. With air conditioning, on-site referees and strict rules against unsafe play, the setting offers a welcoming environment for friendly play.

“It’s just a fun way for families to come out and enjoy themselves without having to spend a dime. There aren’t a lot of free events that the whole family can enjoy together anymore, and we’re happy to provide that,” said Kirk.

Kirk said she plans to bring the event back next year. If you missed the Nerf War, CPRST has more summer events lined up. “Summer Movies at Art Park” will take place on June 20, from 8-11 p.m., featuring “The Little Rascals.” It is free and open to everyone.
