HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Shirley Burden Public Library in Hanceville will host a live poetry night on Friday, May 30, from 6-7 p.m.

Library Manager Teresa Rivera said anyone can attend.

“We will have the ambience, a microphone and a sign-up sheet,” Rivera said. “There will be chairs for the viewing audience, and everyone can listen peacefully as each poet reads. We will serve coffee and tea and snacks afterwards. If the interest is as good as it seems to be, we will continue to do this on a monthly basis.”

Rivera said a Hanceville resident approached her and asked if she could host and assist with the program.

“She had attended other poetry readings in other parts of Alabama and wanted to bring this new concept to Hanceville,” she said. “We also encourage readers to dress up in costume. We have had other local patrons that had mentioned they would like a bit more culture presented in our programs. Since we aim to please the Hanceville community, we welcome new ideas as we move forward.”

Rivera encouraged residents to follow the library on Facebook to keep up with upcoming events. The library’s big book sale is May 24 during the Grilled Cheese Festival in downtown Hanceville.

The Shirley Burden Public Library is located in the heart of downtown Hanceville at 201 Commercial St. It is open 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays.
