29 golfers close under par at the AHSAA’s 76th State Golf Tournament

BIRMINGHAM – The weather couldn’t dampen the AHSAA State Golf Championships at Oxmoor Valley RTJ Golf Course in Birmingham Tuesday as all golfers were able to complete 36 holes – and the end result was phenomenal.

23 boys’ golfers finished the two rounds under par, and six girls were under par.

The top score was turned in by Spain Park’s Chase Kyes, who shot back-to-back rounds of 66 to finish 12-under for the tourney winning 6A low medalist with a 132 total. Cullman’s Will Drake show Tuesday’s low round  (64) and finished one stroke behind Kyes in Class 6A with a Sutter, who shot a low round of 8-under 64 on Monday, closed with a 2-under 70 Tuesday to win the Class 5A low medalist honors with a two-day 10-under 134 – the third lowest total of the tourney.

His brother Rawlin Sutter finished second in the Class 5A meet to his older brother with a 60-70 – 139 total as West Point on the Class 5A state title with a team 600 score (24 over).

The girls’ overall leader was Tuscaloosa Academy’s Saxon Skinner in the Class 4A/5A divisionwho had back-to-back rounds of 4-under 68 to finish 8-under 136 for the tourney. Alabama Christian’s Julie Waldo was one stroke behind at 7-under 137 with rounds of 68 and 69.

Vestavia Hills roared through the 7A competition finishing 25 strokes under par to win the state title in that division with a two-day 278-273 – 551 total. Homewood won the 6A boys’ state championship with a 285-277 – 562 total which was 14 strokes under par.

Other boys’ team champions were Haleyville (588) in Class 4A, Lee-Scott Academy (628) in Class 3A, and Bayshore Christian Academy (630) in Class 1A/2A. In the girls’ competition, Auburn finished just five strokes over par with a 226-211 – 437 total. Girls’ teams count the top three golfers on each squad. The boys’ team totals count the top four boys’ scores.  Pike Road won the 6A girls’ state title with 465 total, Tuscaloosa Academy (438) won the 4A/5A girls’ division, and Wicksburg (511) won the Class 1A/3A state crown.

The individual leaders in each division included:

CLASS 7A BOYS: Thomas Crane of UMS-Wright finished 67-68 – 135 to take low medalist honors at 9-under par. Gus Darnall was second with shooting 69-67 – 136 to finish eight under par. Rebels’ teammates Andrew Davis finished tied for third with Clarke Brown with 7-under 137 totals.

CLASS 6A BOYS: Spain Park’s Kyes and Cullman’s Drake finished 1-2 with their 132 and 233 totals. J.P. Groat of Fort Payne shot 68-70 – 138, followed by Homewood’s Alex Wahl (70-69-139); Murray Walker of Spanish Fort (67-73 – 140); and the more Homewood golfers, Jake Lowery (72-69 – 140); Kenan Rouse (71-68 – 141); and Andrew Wood (71-71 – 142). Russell of Spain Park also shot 2-under 142 with rounds of 70 and 72. Athens’ Keegan Richardson also finished 1-under par shooting 73-70 – 143.

CLASS 5A BOYS: West Point’s Sutter brothers finished 1-2 at 10-under and 5-under, and Guntersville’s Ty Hester finished third at 2-over 72-76 – 146.

CLASS 4A BOYS: Haleyville’s Hudson Lawson earned low medalist shooting 5-under 67 Tuesday to finish 4-under 140. Andrew Turner of American Christian shot 72-71 – 143 for 1under.

CLASS 3A BOYS: No golfer finished under par, but Rogers’ Boone Thigpen shot 76-74 – 150, and Lee-Scott’s David Beard had back-to-back rounds of 76 to finish with a 152 total.

CLASS 1A/2A BOYS: Elba’s Jay Williams carded a 3-under 69 Tuesday and earned low medalist with a two-day 4-under 140 score. Waylon White of Bayshore Christian was second with 75-72 – 147.

CLASS 7A GIRLS: Auburn’s Kate Ha, UMS-Wright’s Frances Brown, and Grissom’s Klare Jamison all tied for low medalist honors with 2-under 142 totals for 36 holes. Ha shot a 68 Tuesday, and Jamison shot a 67 Monday.

CLASS 6A GIRLS: Athens’ Adelyn Pike finished 77-71 – 148 while Pike Road’s Beka Yang finished 76-73 – 149, and Muscle Shoals’ Annalee Regan was two strokes back with 74-76 – 150.

CLASS 4A/5A GIRLS: Finishing second behind Skinner’s back-to-back 68 rounds and 8-under 136 total was Tuscaloosa Academy teammate Anna Christian Beeker, who had rounds of 70 and 77 to finish at 3-over 147, while Beauregard’s Kylee Lynn and West Point’s Brooklyn Sutter finished 5-over 149 with identical rounds of 76 and 73.

CLASS 1A/3A: Waldo earned low medalist for Alabama Christian with her 7-under 137 total. Kamdyn Kelley of Providence Christian and Evelyn Tankersley of Alabama Christian both finished 3-over 147.
