CULLMAN, Ala. – All month, the main branch of the Cullman County Public Library System (CCPLS) has been providing tiny canvases for patrons to take home, decorate as they please, and return by April 30. These canvases will be displayed in the library’s first-ever Tiny Art Gallery during its summer reading program.
Tied to the summer reading program’s theme, “Color Our World,” the project is part of the library’s aim to celebrate local creativity through small-scale art projects.
“Our main goal is to make the library vibrant,” CCPLS Assistant Director Shelby Creekmore explained. “Because of the theme, ‘Color Our World,’ we want to explore different ways to color our world — through food, art and activities — and allow kids and adults to practice that creativity before summer starts.”
The library has a full schedule of activities for the season, with events every Tuesday and Thursday, suitable for all ages. These include art workshops and culinary-themed programs, with a community block party on June 10, marking the program’s official launch.
The “Color Our World” summer program will explore all the different ways to “color” the world in an educational and fun way. Creekmore said it’s more than just exploring color; it’s also about human experience.
“’Color Our World’ is a great summer program because it emphasizes how our world is different, all the variety in our world and all the cultural differences – and the library is the perfect place to explore that,” she said.
If you or someone you know would like to participate, the library will distribute free canvases and art supplies while supplies last. No library card is required to participate, and finished artwork must be returned by April 30 to be displayed.
Creekmore encouraged everyone in the community to get involved and try something new. “(It’s about) just openness to allow yourself to try something new, and even if you’re not good at it, things can still be beautiful.”
