CULLMAN, Ala. – For the 19th time in 23 years Cullman has earned a spot among the top micropolitan areas in the United States, ranking No. 5 in Site Selection Magazine’s prestigious Micropolitan Rankings for 2025. That’s out of over 570 eligible U.S. communities

Despite the challenges posed by the national economy and an uncertain future, the Cullman community has demonstrated resilience and unwavering confidence in its ability to thrive.

The recognition highlights the ongoing efforts of the Cullman Economic Development Agency (CEDA) and the community as a whole to foster a strong local economy.

“We are grateful to be recognized again as a community that can grow even when it’s a down year economically for the entire nation. There are a lot of people whose efforts go into keeping Cullman in the top of these rankings,” said Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs. “I am grateful for a great team at CEDA and the City government as well as the efforts of our (Cullman) County Commission, County and City Schools, and delegations on the local, state and federal level. You don’t win recognitions like this without everyone doing a great job and caring about fostering the success of our community. This wasn’t a win just for Cullman city but for every Cullman County resident.”

High ranking reflects hard work and investment

According to CEDA Director Dale Greer, the No. 5 ranking is a result of the dedication and hard work of the Cullman community.

“Achieving such a high ranking is validation for the hard work our community puts in every day to push the bar forward and make Cullman a successful place to work and live,” said Greer.

The rankings are based on the number of projects in the community, each meeting specific criteria such as creating at least 20 jobs, generating a $1 million capital investment or adding 20,000 square feet to facilities.

Greer said companies only make these kinds of significant investments when they have confidence in the community and its people.

Top rankings over the years

Cullman’ s success is not a one-time achievement. With 570 micropolitan areas across the nation, Cullman has ranked in the top 20 a total of 19 times in the 23-year history of the ranking program. Additionally, the city has secured a spot in the top 3 rankings seven times.

Stanley Kennedy, project manager for CEDA, said Cullman’s consistent success is a reflection of the city’s sustained commitment to growth and development.

Cullman first earned a spot in the top 3 rankings in 2005. Since then, the city has continued to build on its reputation as a thriving hub for economic development, with strong investments from both local and national entities.

The importance of ranking high

The high ranking in Site Selection Magazine’s Micropolitan Rankings holds significant importance for Cullman’s ongoing growth.

“Momentum is everything in development,” said Kennedy. “If you aren’t growing, you are falling behind. There is no status quo.”

The ranking serves as a strong signal to potential companies looking to invest, showcasing Cullman as a place where success is possible. Kennedy stressed that maintaining this momentum is essential for ensuring a prosperous future for both current residents and future generations.

A community effort

Both Greer and Kennedy acknowledged that Cullman’s success is the result of a collective effort.

“Development is very much a community effort, even for those who do not think they do anything with development,” Greer said.

From federal, state and local leadership to the hardworking individuals who contribute daily, every part of the community plays a role in the city’s ongoing achievements, he said.

“We thank you for showing the nation and the world what a special place we have,” added Greer.
