HOLLY POND, Ala. – After knocking off Vinemont to win the Class 3A, Area 11 championship, the Holly Pond Lady Broncos were back home Friday night to host a Sub-Regional game against Colbert County. Holly Pond jumped out to an early lead and kept the Lady Indians at a safe distance the rest of the way to earn a 54-39 win and advance to next week’s Northwest Regional at Wallace State.

The Lady Broncos didn’t waste any time getting out to a big lead. Millie McBee and Ava Thomas each hit a basket down low, then Maggie Nail knocked down a pair from the line to give them a 6-0 lead. Thomas nailed a trey from the left corner, then McBee scored through a foul and ended up hitting the free throw, and Thomas added a floater to extend their lead to 14-0. After Colbert County got on the scoreboard, Sadie Nail split from the free throw line, then McBee scored again in the paint to make it a 17-2 game late in the first quarter. The Lady Indians hit a pair of late threes, including one from well beyond half court, to cut it to 18-8 going into the second.

A rebound and putback by McBee kept it at a 10-point game at 20-10. Madison Butts split from the free throw line, then off the missed free throw, Holly Pond grabbed the rebound, and Maggie Nail found Alana Phillips down low for a basket to give them a 23-12 lead. A trey by Colbert County made it a 23-15 game, but a basket by McBee extended Holly Pond’s lead to 25-15. Maggie Nail hit four free throws late in the first half to put the Lady Broncos ahead, 29-19, at the half.

Sadie Nail buried a trey from the right corner, then another rebound and putback by McBee gave Holly Pond a 34-21 lead. The Lady Indians knocked down a three to trim the deficit to 10 at 36-26, but Holly Pond went on a three-point barrage of their own. Butts knocked down one from the top of the key, then Phillips added one of her own from the left corner to stretch their lead to 42-29. Butts added one more with less than two minutes to go in the quarter, as Holly Pond took a 45-31 lead into the final quarter.

McBee scored the first four points of the fourth quarter for the Lady Broncos, as that extended their lead to 49-31. A late run by the Lady Indians cut it to 50-39, but a late layup by Butts, and two more free throws by Maggie Nail, helped seal the 54-39 win for Holly Pond.

McBee led the way for the Lady Broncos with 18 points. Butts and Maggie Nail each added nine points and Thomas put in seven points.

Holly Pond will be back on the court Wednesday morning to play Phil Campbell at 9 a.m. in the Northwest Regional.
