CULLMAN, Ala. – St. Bernard Preparatory School recently announced the release of the second edition in its annual ornament series, following last year’s successful debut featuring the Abbey Church. The 2024 holiday ornament highlights the historic Administration Building, a campus icon with deep ties to the school’s early history.

Constructed in 1892, the Administration Building is one of St. Bernard Abbey’s oldest and most distinguished structures. In 1914, the building underwent extensive renovations, including the addition of a stone façade and a grand porch with gothic arches, enhancing its prominent appearance. At that time, the wrought iron staircase, originally at the front entrance, was relocated to the old gym, serving as its main access point.

The 1930s saw further expansion of the Administration Building, cementing its role as a central hub for students and monks alike. However, after a tornado in 1988 caused significant damage, part of the building was demolished in 1991. This led to the creation of the open Quad behind the building and marked the return of the wrought iron staircase to the Administration Building — this time as its back entrance, where it remains today.

Currently, the Administration Building houses administrative offices on its lower floors, while the upper two floors serve as the girls’ dormitory. With its storied history and signature architectural features, the building stands as a symbol of St. Bernard’s enduring legacy.

The 2024 brass ornament intricately captures this history and is available as a timeless memento of St. Bernard’s heritage. To purchase, visit www.stbernardprep.com/st-bernard-merchandise. Call 256-739-6682 to pick up an ornament in the historic building.
