RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. – The Fairview Aggies hit the road for a massive region showdown at Russellville Friday night and the latest meeting between these two squads did not disappoint. With the score knotted at 42 at the end of regulation, the game went to overtime and trailing 49-42 in the third overtime period, Fairview found the end zone to make it 49-48. The Aggies opted to go for two and converted to claim a dramatic, 50-49 triple overtime win over the Golden Tigers.
A 1-yard touchdown pass from Kolt Redding to Conner Scott on fourth and goal gave Fairview a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, but Russellville responded with a score on the ensuing possession to tie things up at 7. A big gain on a pass from Redding to Zayden Cruce got the Aggies offense back down into the red zone on their next drive and Jake Harper capped things off with a 3-yard touchdown run to put Fairview back in front 14-7 at the start of the second quarter.
However, the Golden Tigers found the end zone in the final two minutes of the first half to make it a 14-14 game going into the locker room at the break.
A 50-yard touchdown run put Russellville in front 21-14 early in the third but the Aggies responded with a 1-yard touchdown run from Carson Jones to tie the score at 21 with eight minutes to play in third quarter. Fairview trailed 28-21 early in the fourth quarter but Redding ran one into the end zone from 21 yards out to make it a 28-28 game with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation. Harper’s second touchdown run of the night put the Aggies ahead 35-28 with just over two minutes on the clock but Russellville was able to work its way down the field and into the end zone with 35 seconds remaining to tie things up at 35 and force overtime.
On fourth and goal from the 1-yard line, Harper punched one into the end zone to put Fairview on top 42-35, but the Tigers scored on their first overtime play to tie the score back up at 42 and send us to double overtime. The Aggies’ defense stuffed Russellville on fourth down to keep the Tigers off the board and had an opportunity to win it with a short field goal a few plays later but the kick was blocked, and the game went into a third overtime period.
Fairview was finally able to pull ahead for good in triple overtime. Russellville scored on its possession to move in front 49-42 but the Aggies answered when they got the ball back, scoring on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Redding to Blake Rickard to make it a 49-48 game. Fairview opted to go for two and the win and Redding found Cruce in the end zone from 3 yards out to seal a massive, 50-49 region win for the Aggies.
Harper led the way for Fairview on the ground with 144 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Redding added 92 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go with 85 yards and a pair of scores through the air.
The Aggies improve to 5-0 with the win and they will will return home next week to host another region matchup against Priceville.
