CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Public Library Board at its monthly meeting on Thursday, May 16, approved the addition of newly appointed Cullman County Public Library System (CCPLS) Assistant Director Shelby Creekmore to the CCPLB checking account as an authorized user and cardholder. It also heard from new CCPLS Director Amber Thornton, who gave the Director’s Report, highlighting some of the library’s activities, accomplishments and plans.

The library is in the final stages of construction to repair the wall that was damaged during a severe storm in August 2023.

Students from across the county have been reaping the benefits of CCPLS, with St. Paul’s students visiting the library for a field trip, and the library providing Good Hope Middle School students with their own library cards to use over summer break.

According to Thornton, space has been a limiting factor in the library’s book sales.

“We have had good success with our ongoing book sale. We had a good turnout for the Strawberry Festival book sale,” she said. “Due to our limited space, we cannot keep the book sale out. We have discussed having the book sale on our porch during 2nd Fridays this summer.”

The library also received help from one of its supporting organizations, the Friends of the Public Libraries of Cullman County. The group hosted a Storybook 5K, which saw over 55 participants and raised funds to assist the library in purchasing prizes for its Summer Reading Program and paint for the front portion of the library’s interior.

Thornton and Creekmore are in the process of auditing and updating the CCLPS policies and procedures, including the library’s disaster and emergency plans.

“We will provide the drafts at a future meeting so the board can look over, make any changes and then approve the updated plans and policies,” said Thornton.

The next CCPLB meeting will be held Thursday, June 20, at the main branch of the CCPLS at noon.
