PREP BASKETBALL: West Point downs Brewer 73-43 to advance to area finals

WEST POINT, Ala. – The Lady Warriors were back home Saturday night to tip off this year’s 5A, Area 15 Tournament and they punched their ticket to Tuesday’s area championship game with a 73-43 win over Brewer. West Point went into the locker room with a 12-point lead at halftime and outscored the Lady Patriots 37-19 in the second half to pull away with the win.

Liberty Shadix drilled a three to put West Point in front 11-6 early in the first quarter and baskets by Camryn and Jaelyn Faulkner stretched the lead to 15-8 midway through the period. After another bucket from Liberty Shadix, Jaelyn scored five straight for the Lady Warriors to make it a 22-12 game and Caitlee Simmons drained a three in the final minute of the first to give West Point a 25-14 lead at the start of the second.

Baskets by Jaelyn Faulkner and Liberty Shadix kept the Lady Warriors ahead 29-18 midway through the second quarter. Kylee Quinn split a pair of free throws and Liberty Shadix laid one in to make it a 32-21 game later in the period and Camryn Faulkner and Laklin Shadix each scored in the final minute of the half to give the Lady Warriors a 36-24 advantage at the break.

Laklin Shadix hit a pair of free throws to make it a 38-24 game and Jaelyn Faulkner took over from there, scoring the next nine points for West Point to extend the lead to 47-25. Liberty Shadix knocked down a three to give the Lady Warriors a 50-26 lead midway through the third quarter and with less than two minutes remaining in the period, Laklin Shadix drained a three to help build the lead up to 55-36 with just eight minutes left to play.

Liberty Shadix hit a jumper and Hallie Wheeler laid one in to put West Point in front 59-36 early in the fourth quarter. Baskets by Camryn Faulkner and Wheeler helped make it a 64-36 game later in the period and a pair of buckets from Ella Minck gave the Lady Warriors a 68-43 lead with less than two minutes on the clock. Simmons scored inside to make it a 70-43 game and Sara Owens knocked down a three just before time expired to put the finishing touches on a 73-43 win for West Point.

Jaelyn Faulkner led the Lady Warriors with 23 points in the win. Liberty Shadix finished with 16 and Wheeler added eight.

West Point will be back on the court Tuesday night to face either Russellville or Lawrence County in the 5A, Area 15 championship game.
