CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office recently honored Capt. Ricky Blackwood for his contribution to the law enforcement community by naming its training center the James R. Blackwood Training Center.

Sheriff Matt Gentry said Blackwood has been a staple in local law enforcement for more than three decades.

“His contribution to Cullman County and the sheriff’s office is unrivaled,” Gentry said. “He has served as a patrol deputy, K9 handler and a narcotics investigator. Captain Blackwood is currently the captain over the patrol division of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.”

On Dec. 18, the CCSO posted to its Facebook page: “Earlier today, Sheriff Matt Gentry hosted a Christmas Breakfast for the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office. Captain Ricky (sic) Blackwood was honored at the celebration as the Sheriff’s Office Training Center was named in his honor. Captain Blackwood’s law enforcement career has spanned the better part of 35 years. The ‘James R. Blackwood Training Center’ will be a lasting reminder of his commitment and dedication.”

Gentry continued, “He is a long-standing staple of the sheriff’s office. His experience, commitment and love for the community continues to be an inspiration to us all. Captain Blackwood is not only a colleague and a mentor, but more importantly a friend.”
