PREP VOLLEYBALL: Fairview wins senior night matches over Scottsboro, Decatur Heritage

FAIRVIEW, Ala. — The Fairview Lady Aggies celebrated Senior Night on the volleyball court Thursday with a tri-match against Scottsboro and Decatur Heritage. After trailing the Lady Wildcats 2-0, the Lady Aggies rallied to win the next three sets to win the series, 3-2, and they finished off the night by sweeping the Lady Eagles 2-0.

Fairview 3 – Scottsboro 2 (First Match)

Fairview got off to a great start in the first set as an ace from Laci Segrest and a kill by Ava Calvarese helped them jump out to a quick 5-0 lead. A pair of points and a kill by Kabri Redding helped the Lady Aggies increase their lead to 10-3, but a huge rally by Scottsboro cut it to 10-9. Fairview pushed their lead to 13-9, and later on, to 15-11, but five straight points by the Lady Wildcats gave them a 16-15 lead. They later swelled their lead to 21-17, but back-to-back kills by Somer Harris and Redding cut it to 21-19. Later on, another kill by Redding made it a 22-20 game, but Scottsboro held them off at the end as they ended up scoring the final three points of the set to take the first one, 25-20.

The Lady Wildcats carried that momentum into the second set as they jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead. A point by Sadie Smith cut it to 10-3, but a 7-0 run by Scottsboro made it a 17-3 game. A kill by Redding and an ace from Reagan Dunkin trimmed the deficit to 10 at 17-7. The Lady Wildcats later held a 19-8 lead, but Fairview looked to make things interesting. Dunkin got a point to get the Lady Aggie run started, and later on, a Harris ace made it a 19-13 game. Segrest collected an ace later on in the set to cut it to 22-17, but they wouldn’t get any closer after that as Scottsboro ended up taking the second set, 25-17.

The third set saw Scottsboro hold a slim 3-2 lead early on, but the Lady Aggies scored the next six points, as a point by Redding, a pair of aces from Dunkin and a Harris kill, gave them an 8-3 lead. They continued to add onto their lead as a point and a kill by Segrest helped Fairview push their lead to 13-4. The Lady Wildcats, though, started to cut into the Lady Aggie lead and made it a 15-10 game at one point in the contest. Back-to-back kills by Jacie Blackwood and Calvarese pushed the Lady Aggie lead to 17-10, and they would quickly start to pull away, as a point and an ace from Calvarese, and a point and a kill by Redding, made it a 21-11 game. Fairview would go on to take the third set, 25-15, to cut it to a 2-1 series lead for Scottsboro.

Just like the third set, Fairview got off to a great start in the fourth one as points by Smith and Redding, and an ace from Calvarese helped them jump out to a quick 10-2 lead. They later made it 13-4 on a point by Harris, but Scottsboro trimmed it to 17-9. Back-to-back kills by Harris and Blackwood, and a pair of Blackwood points increased the Fairview lead to 22-9. The Lady Wildcats went on another late run to get back in the game as they ended up making it a 22-15 contest. Fairview, though, was determined to send the game to a fifth and deciding set, and that’s exactly what they did, as they ended up taking the fourth set, 25-16, to tie things up at two.

Scottsboro got off to a 3-1 lead in the fifth and deciding set, but the Lady Aggies scored the next seven points, including points by Calvarese and Harris, and a kill by Redding, to take an 8-3 lead. The Lady Wildcats, though, continued to battle as they scored the next four points to cut it to 8-7. A kill by Redding made it a 10-7 game, and later on, Abby McDonald added an ace to push the Lady Aggie lead to 13-8. Scottsboro trimmed the deficit to just two at 13-11, but Harris and Segrest got the final two points of the set for Fairview as they ended up taking the fifth set, 15-11. Fairview came back from trailing 2-0 in the series to take the final three sets to win the series, 3-2.

Fairview 2 – Decatur Heritage 0 (Second Match)

Fairview held a slim 4-3 lead early on in the first set, and later pushed their lead to 7-4 on a Dunkin ace and a point by Smith. They later made it 10-6 on a McDonald ace and a kill by Segrest. Segrest later added another kill, and Smith collected another point, as the Lady Aggies quickly pushed their lead to 15-6. They would widen their lead even more, as a pair of points by Segrest, an ace from Harris, and a kill by Calvarese, made it a 20-7 game. Decatur Heritage trimmed it to 20-10, but the Lady Aggies was simply too much for the Lady Eagles in the first set, as they ended up taking it, 25-12.

Fairview got off to a strong start in the second set. Kills by Segrest and Redding and aces from Calvarese and Dunkin helped them jump out to a quick 7-3 lead. The Lady Eagles trimmed it to 8-7, but back-to-back points by Segrest and Calvarese, plus an ace from Harris, pushed the Lady Aggie lead to 11-7. Fairview quickly made it a 16-9 game on points by Segrest and Blackwood and a Redding kill. They pushed their lead to 21-11 on a kill by Blackwood, and Segrest ended up getting the final two points of the game. The Lady Aggies went on to sweep the Lady Eagles, 25-12, and 25-14.

Fairview will stay home to take on Susan Moore and Douglas in a tri-match Monday.
