HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The city of Hanceville has a new police chief. Joshua Howell was sworn in by Hanceville Municipal Judge Steven Gravlee Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the Hanceville City Council meeting. Howell replaces longtime Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long, who announced his retirement in March.

In a letter, Howell shared his gratitude and appreciation for the residents of Hanceville for entrusting him with the responsibility. “I am humbled by the confidence you have placed in me to lead the Hanceville Police Department, and I promise to work tirelessly to live up to your expectations and to serve the people of this community with honor, integrity and respect.”

He also shared his respect for Long, stating, “He has been an invaluable asset to this department, and I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon the foundation he has laid.”

Howell laid out his expectations for the department’s future, saying that building strong relationships with the community and prioritizing professional development and training for officers will be key to serving the community effectively. He said working closely with other law enforcement agencies and community organizations to develop partnerships and collaborate for a shared goal of safety and security in the community will also be a priority.
