PREP BASKETBALL: Lady Raiders remain unbeaten with 91-26 win over Fultondale, Raiders race past Wildcats 89-71

GOOD HOPE, Ala. — Thursday night was homecoming at Good Hope High School and the Raiders celebrated on the court with a pair of wins over the Fultondale Wildcats. The top-ranked Lady Raiders improved to 25-0 with a dominant, 91-26 performance against Fultondale and the fourth-ranked Raiders lit up the scoreboard in their own 89-71 win over Fultondale.

Good Hope 91 – Fultondale 26 (Varsity Girls)

Good Hope got off to yet another fast start offensively as Ivey Maddox scored the Lady Raiders’ first eight points of the game and Rudi Derrick drilled a three from the left corner to give them a quick 11-0 lead. Baskets by Charly Johnson and Maddox made it 22-0, then a basket by Bailey Tetro and a three by Heather Tetro gave them a 27-0 lead. Fultondale got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter, but Derrick and Maddox would each hit a basket in the paint as Good Hope took a commanding 31-4 lead into the second period.

The second quarter was a big one for Jolee McHan as she scored the first five points of the period to make it a 36-4 game. Baskets by Lexi Collins, McHan, and Bailey Keef made it 48-11, then McHan added a late basket as the Lady Raiders went into the locker room up by a score of 50-11. The second half was more of the same as the bench players got plenty of playing time in this game as all but one Good Hope player found the scoring column in their 91-26 dominating win over the Lady Wildcats.

Maddox led the way for Good Hope (25-0) with 19 points. Collins added 16 points. McHan ended up with 15 points. Heather Tetro added 11 points and Derrick, in addition to being crowned homecoming queen, finished with 10 points. The Lady Raider defense held the Lady Wildcats to just 10 made baskets for the entire game.

Good Hope 89 – Fultondale 71 (Varsity Boys)

An offensive rebound and put-back by Tyler Cone put Good Hope on the scoreboard first, K’mal Bell got fouled while shooting a three, and ended up hitting all three free throws to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead. A basket by Cone and a three by Bell made it 10-0, then Fultondale quickly went on an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to two at 10-8. Colton Lindsey drilled a trey from the top of the key to make it a 13-8 game with less than four minutes to go in the opening period. Weston Hancock hit a pair of shots late in the first quarter to give the Raiders a 17-12 lead, but a pair of late baskets by the Wildcats made it a one-point game. A free throw by Jacob Haynes made it a two-point game going into the second period.

Good Hope quickly added onto their lead in the second quarter as a basket in the paint by Colten Whatley, a three by Dakota Overton and a basket down low by Cone pushed the Raider lead to 25-16. Bell drilled a three and got fouled; he completed the four-point play to make it 29-16. But the Wildcats went on another run to get back in the game as they scored the next seven points to cut it to 29-23. Baskets by Lindsey and Hancock made it 33-23, but later on, a pair of Wildcat free throws cut it to 37-30 late in the period. Tucker Malin drilled a long-range shot, then Hancock scored the next six points for the Raiders as they would take a 46-34 lead into the locker room.

Baskets by Bell, Lindsey, and Haynes pushed the Good Hope lead to 54-37, but the Wildcats cut it to 55-43 late in the third quarter. An and-one by Lindsey and a basket by Ace Stricklin increased the Raider lead to 60-43, but a late run by the Wildcats trimmed it to 60-49. Bell ended up scoring the final five points for the Raiders as they would take a 65-49 lead into the final period.

The Wildcats would cut it to 66-54 to start out the final period, but Bell hit a tough shot, then Cone and Haynes would each hit a basket of their own to push the Raider lead to 72-54. An and-one by Haynes made it 75-56 and he would later hit a fast-break layup off a Wildcat turnover to increase the lead to 77-59. Fultondale would end up cutting it to 77-66, but Good Hope wouldn’t let them get any closer after that as free throws by Lindsey and Bell and baskets by Cone and Jed Clements helped Good Hope pull away as they ended up collecting an 89-71 win over the Wildcats.

Bell led the way for Good Hope (18-6) with 24 points. Lindsey added 15 points, Hancock posted 13 points and Cone and Haynes each ended up with 12 points.
