PREP BASKETBALL: Warriors, Lady Warriors earn wins at Vinemont

VINEMONT, Ala. – West Point made the short trip over to Vinemont High School Monday night to battle the Eagles in a pair of varsity matchups and both the Warriors and Lady Warriors returned home with wins. The Lady Warriors pulled away in the final frame to top Vinemont 55-44 and the Kolten Perry and Jay Lamar poured in 48 combined points to lead the Warriors past the Eagles 60-52.

West Point 55 – Vinemont 44 (Varsity Girls)

Whitney Quick drilled a three to put Vinemont on the scoreboard, but West Point’s Laklin Shadix hit a shot down low to put them on the scoreboard. A pair of Liberty Shadix free throws made it 5-4 with 4:18 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles got a three each from Raylee and Whitney Quick as they pushed their lead to 11-4. The Lady Warriors trimmed the deficit to just four at 11-7 on a Caitlee Simmons trey and later in the period, a Laklin Shadix three made it a 13-10 game going into the second period.

The Lady Eagles quickly added to their lead to start the second quarter as a pair of Caroline Miller threes made it 20-10 with 5:22 left to go in the quarter. Hailee Wheeler drilled one from long range to make it a 20-14 game and later on, Laklin Shadix and Ella Minck each hit a basket in the paint to cut it to 22-18. Maggie Burks knocked down a shot and Carley Stephens completed her and-one opportunity to push the Vinemont lead to 27-18, but Jaylen Faulkner and Liberty Shadix each hit a shot from long range to cut it to 27-24 at the half.

Liberty Shadix hit back-to-back shots down low to start the third quarter and that gave West Point a 28-27 lead. Raylee Quick banked in a three to give Vinemont a 30-29 lead almost halfway through the third period. A Stephens made basket saw the Lady Eagles hold onto a slim 32-31 lead, but a Wheeler trey gave the Lady Warriors the lead right back at 34-32. Four quick points by Whitney Quick gave Vinemont a 36-34 lead late in the third period. Jaylen Faulkner knocked down a floater to tie the game, then Wheeler broke the tie with her third trey of the night as the Lady Warriors took a 39-36 lead into the final period.

Back-to-back baskets by Reagan Robinson gave Vinemont the lead right back at 40-39 to start out the final quarter, but West Point responded quickly and got the lead back. Liberty and Laklin Shadix each knocked down a three to give the Lady Warriors a 45-40 lead. Minck added one from long range as well and Laklin Shadix hit another three to push the Lady Warrior lead to 51-40. Robinson hit a pair of baskets down low as the Lady Eagles looked to make a comeback late in the game, but they couldn’t get any closer after that as West Point ended up taking the game, 55-44.

Liberty Shadix finished the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and two steals for West Point (5-5). Laklin Shadix added 13 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Wheeler ended up with 12 points. Minck added nine points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Faulkner ended up with seven points. For Vinemont (9-6), Whitney Quick finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Robinson added nine points, five rebounds, and six steals. Stephens added seven points, six rebounds, and three blocks, while Miller and Raylee Quick each finished with six points.

West Point 60 – Vinemont 52 (Varsity Boys)

Jay Lamar hit a shot down low to put West Point on the scoreboard first, but Vinemont’s Chayce Sandlin knocked down a jumper to tie it up at two early in the game. A Lamar trey gave the Warriors a 5-2 lead, but a pair of Isiah Jones free throws was later followed by back-to-back baskets by Isaac Moody and that gave the Eagles an 8-5 lead with less than three minutes to go in the first period. Seven straight points by Lamar gave West Point a 12-8 lead, but a Moody three cut it to 12-11. A pair of Kolten Perry free throws made it a 14-12 game, but Jordan Eller drilled a deep three just before the buzzer sounded to give the Eagles a 15-14 lead going into the second period.

Perry got a steal and got the basket to go to give the Warriors a 16-15 lead early in the second quarter. A Ryan Stewart three gave the Eagles the lead right back at 18-16, but Lamar got fouled while shooting a three and ended up hitting all three as West Point grabbed a 19-18 lead. Kanaan Sutter and Perry followed that up with a trey each to push the Warrior lead to 25-18. Perry scored five straight points as West Point increased their lead to 30-20, but a three each by Stewart and Moody trimmed the deficit to just five at 32-27. Perry finished out a huge second quarter strong as he hit another basket down low as the Warriors took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.

Stewart and Connor Gibbs each hit a trey to make it a 37-33 game early in the third quarter, but another Perry basket made it 39-33. Sandlin and Moddy each hit a free throw to cut it to 39-35, but Perry hit a pair of free throws and another basket down low to push the Warrior lead to 43-35. Dawson Wilhite drilled a long-range shot to make it a 43-38 game. A Lamar three increased the Warrior lead to 49-40, but a Dalton Ray made basket made it a 49-42 game going into the final period.

Both teams traded baskets for most of the fourth quarter. A Lamar trey for West Point was then followed by a Stewart trey for Vinemont and that kept the deficit at seven at 56-49. Huge baskets late by J.D. Cochran and Sutter made it a 60-49 game and the Warriors would go on to defeat the Eagles, 60-52.

Lamar finished with 25 points for West Point (4-9). Perry added 23 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Rodgers (four steals) and Sutter (13 rebounds and four blocks) each ended up with five points. For Vinemont (4-8), Moody led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds. Stewart added 12 points, while Sandlin ended up with eight points.

West Point will head home to take on Arab Tuesday night and the Eagles will get ready to participate in the St. Bernard Christmas Tournament Thursday. They will take on Athens Bible at 2:15 p.m.
