PREP FOOTBALL: Vinemont races past Holly Pond 42-22

HOLLY POND, Ala. – Vinemont traveled to take on the Holly Pond Broncos in their regular season finale and the Eagles came away victorious 42-22.

Vinemont received the opening kick-off, and a steady dose off the ground game put Vinemont up 6-0 when Rush Sandlin plunged into the endzone from a yard out with 7:12 remaining in the opening quarter.

On the Broncos first possession Vinemont forced a punt, the Eagles blocked the punt, and it was recovered by Vinemont at the 25-yard line. Vinemont tacked onto their lead four plays later when Diego Rodriguez scored from 3 yards out to put the Eagles up 12-0 with 1:12 remaining in the first quarter. Vinemont forced a punt but turned the ball back to the Broncos, Vinemont got the ball right back when Dawson Wilhite intercepted the pass. Vinemont capitalized on the turnover to go up 20-0 when Rodriguez raced 18 yards for the touchdown with 3:51 remaining until halftime. The Broncos struck to cut into the deficit when Sawyer Olinger found Collin Brown from 8 yards out with 45 seconds remaining to make the score 20-8 heading to halftime.

Vinemont forced a punt to start the third quarter, Vinemont took advantage and added to their lead when Kyler Pugh scored from 31 yards out to put the Eagles ahead 26-8 at the midway point of the third quarter. Holly Pond cut into the lead early in the fourth quarter when Olinger found Christian Couch for a 16-yard touchdown to pull within 12 at 26-14.

Vinemont quickly regained momentum two plays later when Sandlin found Toby Hill for a 56-yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 34-14 with 8:49 left in the game. With 4:57 remaining in the game Holly Pond answered to cut the lead to 12 once again, 34-22, when Damian Raymond plunged 2 yards for the touchdown. Vinemont answered to push the lead back to 42-22 with four minutes remaining in the game when Kayden Henderson raced 31 yards for a touchdown. Two plays later Wilhite got his second interception of the night to give the ball back to the Eagles and they were able to run out the clock.

Vinemont will travel to Lauderdale County for the opening round of the 3A State Playoffs next week.
