VINEMONT, Ala. – The Butcher Meat Co. in Vinemont is welcoming competitors to enter its Backyard Grill-Off Saturday, Oct. 22.  Competitors are asked to sign up by Oct. 14.

Kadi and Justin Smith opened the shop in July and decided to host the event to give back to their community. It will be a fundraiser for Vinemont parks.

The cost for the meats will be included in registration fees. Competitors will be allowed to pick up meat on the morning of the competition at The Butcher Meat Co. from 5-8 a.m. All competitors will need to be set up by 8:30. Trophies will be awarded to the Grand Champion (the winner of all three categories) and first-place finishers in each category. The Grand Champion will receive $1,500, first place in each category will receive $1,000, second place will receive $500 and third place will receive $125.

Vendors will offer face painting, cotton candy and popcorn. Cha Cha’s Shaved Ice will be on-site. Other vendors with barbecue-related products like cutting boards, sauces and spices are wanted. To fill out a vendor form, go to https://butchermeatco.com/backyard-grill-off.

Richard Neese of Tenax Enterprises helped organize the event to support the town’s newest business.

Neese said, “We’ve got a lot of folks that say they’re coming, but we need competitors. We want to make sure that we have the local guys. This isn’t for the big-time competitors. If they want to come, they can, but it’s really about celebrating our community, and we also want to give everybody a shot to win.”

The net proceeds from the event will go into a town fund to be earmarked for use at Vinemont’s new Art Park and Henry & Roe Wood Park.

Neese said, “There’s a trust set up to take care of it (Henry & Roe Wood Park), but it doesn’t make money every year, so there’s nobody maintaining that park. That’s why we wanted to donate the net proceeds to those two parks to help them get up and going.”

Parking will be at the Community Center and Vinemont Christian Church. Attendants can walk along Roberson Street, or golf carts will be available for transport to the event. A handicap drop-off will be next to Beyond Dental on Patton Drive.

The Butcher Meat Co. is located at 149 Patton Drive in Vinemont.
