PREP VOLLEYBALL: West Point drops home match with Mortimer Jordan

WEST POINT, Ala. — The West Point Lady Warriors hosted the Mortimer Jordan Lady Blue Devils in a Tuesday night volleyball matchup but unfortunately for the home crowd, Mortimer Jordan was able to leave with a 3-1 win.

Mortimer Jordan 25 – West Point 9 (First Set)

The first game was close early on as an early kill by Charli Aris tied it up at one, but Mortimer Jordan got a pair of points to grab a 3-1 lead. They later pushed it to 7-4, but a point by Marli Powell made it a 7-5 game. The Lady Blue Devils ended up breaking the game wide open as they went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 13-5. Liberty Shadix got a point to make it a 13-6 game, but Mortimer Jordan quickly increased their lead to 20-8 and they ended up taking game one, 25-9.

Liberty Shadix finished with a pair of points and a kill for West Point. Aris added a kill. Hallie Wheeler ended up with a dig and Powell added a point.

West Point 25 – Mortimer Jordan 14 (Second Set)

West Point got off to a very fast start in game two as Brooklyn Wells started things off with a point, then a Wheeler ace made it 2-0. Consecutive kills by Liberty Shadix made it 4-0, then later on, an ace from Wells pushed the Lady Warrior lead to 6-1. A point by Laklin Shadix made it 8-2, but Mortimer Jordan went on a huge run to get back in the game as they scored eight of the next ten points to tie the contest up at 10. A kill by Macie Brown, followed by an Aris ace, gave the Lady Warriors a 12-10 lead. That helped them go on a huge run of their own as Wheeler collected three aces, Liberty Shadix added a pair of points, Kylee Quinn got a point of her own, and Brown added a kill. A 7-0 run helped push West Point’s lead to 19-11. Another Quinn point made it 24-14 and the Lady Warriors finished things shortly after that as they ended up winning game two, 25-14.

Liberty Shadix finished with three points and a trio of kills for West Point. Wheeler added four aces. Wells ended up with a pair of aces and a point. Brown added a pair of kills. Quinn finished with two points. Laklin Shadix added a point of her own and Aris chipped in with an ace.

Mortimer Jordan 28 – West Point 26 (Third Set)

West Point got off to another good start in game three. A point from Liberty Shadix and another Wheeler ace gave them a quick 3-0 lead, but five straight Lady Blue Devils gave them a 5-3 lead. Another Mortimer Jordan run helped push their lead to 12-5 and later on, to 16-8. The Lady Warriors slowly started to chip away at the deficit as kills by Wells and Brown made it 17-11 and later on, a Quinn point and a Wheeler ace cut it to 17-13. A huge kill by Quinn made it a 20-17 game and Caitlee Simmons delivered a big ace to swivel the deficit to just one at 21-20. A point by Liberty Shadix tied things up at 25 and later on, West Point took a 26-25 lead. But the Lady Blue Devils ended up getting the final three points of the game as they ended up taking game three, 28-26.

Wheeler added two more aces in game three for West Point. Brown and Quinn each added a kill and a point. Simmons ended up with an ace and a point. Liberty and Laklin Shadix each added a pair of points and Wells chipped in with a kill of her own.

Mortimer Jordan 27 – West Point 25 (Fourth Set)

The game was tied at two early on in game four, but West Point quickly broke that tie as they scored the next four points. A point by Quinn gave them a 3-2 lead, then a Liberty Shadix and a big kill by Quinn made it 6-2. A Laklin Shadix kill kept the lead at four for West Point at 7-3, but once again, Mortimer Jordan went on another run as they ended up tying the game up at nine. Another Quinn kill gave West Point an 11-9 lead. Four straight points by the Lady Blue Devils gave them a 13-11 lead. A Patton Fell ace cut it to 16-15, and later on, an Aris kill kept the deficit at one at 17-16. Mortimer Jordan held a 24-20 lead, but the Lady Warriors came storming back as huge kills by Liberty Shadix and Quinn helped them tie things up at 24. West Point tied it up at 25 and looked to send it to a fifth game, but they would fall just short at the end as the Lady Blue Devils got the final two points of the contest to win game four, 27-25.

Quinn finished with three points and a pair of kills for West Point. Liberty Shadix added a pair of kills, an ace, and a point. Laklin Shadix ended up with a trio of kills. Fell added an ace. Aris finished with a kill and Brown chipped in with a point of her own.

West Point will participate in a tournament in Hartselle Saturday as they will face off against the Lady Tigers at 8:30 a.m. to start things off.
