CULLMAN, Ala. – This year’s John E. Hunt Memorial Golf Tournament at Cross Creek Golf Course is fast approaching and there’s still time to register for a spot in the field and support a great cause. John Hunt, who passed away in March 2020, served as Cullman’s Parks and Recreation Director for over 22 years before retiring from the department in 2014, helping to lay the groundwork for many of the local parks and facilities we still enjoy today. Hunt’s family shared some information on this year’s event and the causes it will continue to support.

“John Hunt believed education could change a life and brighten a future, and he believed in supporting his home community of Cullman. His legacy continues as the community comes together for the Second Annual John E. Hunt Golf Tournament scheduled for Saturday, August 27.

After John’s passing in 2020, the Hunt family committed to honor his legacy for education and supporting the community of Cullman by establishing a scholarship at his alma mater, Auburn University. The scholarship is awarded each year to a Cullman County resident that has been accepted or is continuing an education at Auburn.

The first John E. Hunt Golf Tournament in 2021, enabled the family to successfully endow the scholarship at Auburn University. This was accomplished through community support and local business sponsorship for the tournament, donations made specifically to his scholarship at Auburn, friends and family playing in the golf tournament, and those sponsoring a hole and donating a door prize. The Hunt’s family dream of impacting another person’s life, while honoring John’s character, values and love for Auburn became a reality in the first year of the golf tournament.

Proceeds from this year’s tournament will begin the funding of a similar scholarship at Wallace State Community College. The John and Elizabeth Hunt Scholarship will change local lives by helping students meet their educational goals by attending Wallace State.

Thank you to our family, friends and the Cullman Community for the continued support and especially for remembering John and love for this community. We are looking forward to another great golf tournament, seeing friends and sharing your favorite stories about John.”
