PREP FOOTBALL: Vinemont outraces Falkville in 46-40 shootout

VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Eagles kicked off the 2022 season on their home field against Falkville Friday night and they went back and forth with the Blue Devils in a season-opening shootout. After four quarters of fireworks, the Eagles were able to finish in front 46-40 to start their season 1-0.

The opening quarter started quickly as Vinemont’s Kayden Henderson took the opening kick-off 78 yards for the touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 7-0 with 11:48 remaining in the opening quarter. After a strong dose of the ground game Falkville answered with their own touchdown to take an 8-7 lead with just under 8 minutes left in the first quarter. Vinemont quickly regained the lead, 13-8, when Isaac Moody took the ensuing kick-off 77 yards to the house.

The ensuing kick-off Falkville fumbled the ball, and it was recovered by Vinemont’s Kayden Henderson but was unable to capitalize on the good field position. The Blue Devils went on a lengthy drive to regain the lead 14-13 with only 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter. It didn’t take long for the Eagles to answer, Kayden Henderson went straight up the middle for 50 yards on the next offensive play for the Eagles to the put Vinemont up 21-14 with just 38 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Midway through the second quarter Vinemont stretched the lead when Henderson broke free for 37 yards to give the Eagles a 27-14 advantage. The ensuing kickoff was returned by the Blue Devils which cut the lead to 27-22.

With five minutes remaining in the third quarter Henderson plunged into the endzone from 2 yards out to put the Eagles ahead 33-22. After a Falkville 3 and out Vinemont’s Ayden Thomason went in from 2 yards out to stretch the Eagles lead to 39-22 with 3:30 left in the third quarter. Falkville answered right back with a long touchdown pass which cut the lead to 39-28.

Vinemont tacked on another touchdown when Diego Rodriguez scored from 10 yards out, putting the Eagles up 46-28. Falkville was able to find the endzone two more times to cut the lead to 46- 40, but Vinemont was able to run the clock out at the end of the game to seal a 46-40 victory in the first game of the season.

Vinemont will be on the road next week to face off against the Good Hope Raiders.
