BREMEN, Ala. – Pair O’ Docs Horse Farm will hold a summer camp July 18-22 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for kids ages 6-14. (Lunch will not be provided.) Attendees will go through a “horse school,” where they will learn all about horse care, anatomy, health and behavior, and how to ride. They will also enjoy fun barn and riding activities.

Pair O’ Docs is located in Bremen and provides pasture boarding, trail riding and training classes for English and Western riding. When students advance, they are taught some dressage, jumping, barrel racing and pole bending skills.

The farm is owned by Lucy Andrews and her husband, Trygve Tollefsbol.

“My husband and I moved to Alabama from North Carolina in 1998 when UAB hired us both to teach and do molecular genetics research in the Biology Department,” said Andrews. “We had completed postdocs (obtained doctoral degrees) at Duke and UNC and were looking for a job and a farm for our two horses and goat. We had a small 3-acre farm in Durham and wanted more land. We went a bit overboard and bought 80 acres and a nice house and barn in Bremen, Alabama, an hour’s drive from UAB.”

She continued, “We named our farm Pair O’ Docs since we both had our doctorates. We took several years clearing pastures, fencing and adding to our herd. Finally, we started offering lessons and boarding for families who wanted horses but had no place to keep them. We developed trails for those who wanted to ride and did not have a horse of their own. We also let folks bring their own horse and use our facilities and trails.

“Word of us spread and we have added therapeutic riding to our program. We currently have two TBI individuals in the program and a PATH-certified instructor who comes weekly from Hartselle to work with them. In 2019 we hosted a visit by the Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group and several of the students rode our horses and had a wonderful time! We hope they come back again!”

The cost for the summer camp is $100 per child. To register, email pairodocsfarm@gmail.com or call 256-531-8688.

Beginner lessons and beyond are offered regularly at the farm, for students as young as 6. Guided trail rides are also available. Find out more about Pair O’ Docs Horse Farm at https://pairodocsfarm.godaddysites.com.
