CULLMAN, Ala. – After rescheduling due to rain, Houseplant Collective finally able set up their Plant Bus at Dreher’s Cocktail Bar and Restaurant Saturday afternoon.

Houseplant Collective owner Jessica Watts previously spoke to The Tribune on the business’ history explaining, “House Plant Collective was started in 2020 as a home-based passion project. I had the dream and planned in 2019; and just before launching the business, COVID hit. After starting by selling online, House Plant Collective shifted from pop-up events in the business into our first brick-and-mortar location in the Avondale Neighborhood of Birmingham, and recently opened our second location in downtown Tuscaloosa in July 2021.”

She continued, “House Plant Collective is [both] a mobile plant shop in a converted school bus, and a house plant store, located in the Avondale area of Birmingham and downtown Tuscaloosa, offering a variety of tropical house plants and botanical goods. At House Plant Collective, our mission is to connect a community of plant enthusiasts and provide the education you need for your plants to thrive. Whether you are new to the plant world, or consider yourself a plant expert, House Plant Collective is here to find the perfect fit for you.”

Dreher’s co-owner Christine Chamblee spoke before the event on her expectations of the turnout since rescheduling, saying, “We have heard a ton of excitement from our guests. The weather today has been absolutely gorgeous! A perfect day for shopping for plants and drinking a couple plant-themed cocktails.”

Chamblee designed an entire plant-inspired cocktail menu for the event, with drinks such as the Cactus Cooler, Persian Rose, Lavender Lemonade, Basil Vodka Gimlet, Thyme After Thyme and The Secret Life of Plants. These handcrafted cocktails were made for guests by bartender and front of house manager Broc Malcom, who shared with The Tribune, “I am very optimistic about the turnout for the Plant Bus. Plants seem to be the cool thing right now. It’s the ‘in’ thing, so, I do think a lot of people are going to come.”

Cullman local Julianna Burnham attended the Plant Bus pop up after seeing news of the event online and offered her thoughts, “Cullman never has anything quite like this, so this was pretty cool and unique. The drink menu was so pretty, and the weather is great. I would say it has been a pretty good day.”

After the event, Chamblee spoke on the potential future returns of Houseplant Collective’s Plant Bus, saying, “We definitely think this will be another future event here at Dreher’s. Everyone had a blast! We had a fantastic turnout, and we plan to do more events like this soon, so make sure to keep an eye out!”

Dreher’s Cocktail Bar and Restaurant is located at 216 First Avenue SE and is open Wednesday – Sunday. Visit https://www.drehersdowntown.com for hours, menus, and more information.
