HANCEVILLE, Ala. – After knocking off Vinemont in the season opener, Hanceville took the week off last week to gear up for Friday night’s road trip and region opener against the Fultondale Wildcats. The Bulldogs got up on the Wildcats early, but Fultondale was able to put points on the board and rally to come back and defeat Hanceville in a shootout, 44-36.

Zac Campbell connected with JT Davis from 4 yards out to put the Bulldogs in front 6-0 midway through the first quarter and Brosnan Ward punched one in from 7 yards out to make it a 12-0 game with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter. However, Fultondale was able to answer with a touchdown before the start of the second quarter and cut the lead to 12-8 going into the second.

The Bulldog defense got in on the fun in the second quarter when Brady Cleek scooped up a fumble and took it back 20 yards for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 18-8 early in the second quarter. Fultondale continued to respond, scoring another touchdown and adding a safety to cut the lead down to 18-17 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. That’s when Campbell broke free for a 60-yard touchdown that put Hanceville on top 24-17 going into the halftime break.

The Wildcats found the endzone once again to tie things up at 24 early in the third quarter and tacked on another score to pull ahead 31-24 with around two minutes to play in the period. Campbell came up with another big play, scoring on a 57-yard run to make it a 31-30 game but Fultondale took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to extend its lead to 38-30 going into the final frame.

After another Wildcats touchdown made it 44-30 with less than five minutes to play, Campbell ran in his third touchdown of the night from 16 yards out to cut the lead to 44-36 but the Bulldogs couldn’t come up with the ensuing onside kick and Fultondale held on to defeat Hanceville 44-36. Campbell posted four touchdowns in the loss, three on the ground and one through the air.

Hanceville falls to 1-1 with the loss and will be back home next week to host Dora in another regional matchup.
