GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Tuesday was packed with more summer games for several local teams and both the Good Hope Raiders and Lady Raiders varsity squads hosted matchups on their home floor. The Raiders split their early games, routing Falkville 70-39 and dropping a tight contest with Fayette County 49-47. The Lady Raiders took the floor immediately following the Raiders’ matchup with Fayette County and dismantled Cordova 64-14 to earn their first win of the day.

Good Hope 70 – Falkville 39 (Varsity Boys)

Good Hope’s Tanner Malin drilled a three to put them on the scoreboard first, but Falkville quickly scored five in a row to take a 5-3 lead. Weston Hancock and Tanner Malin scored the next seven points for the Raiders as they got the lead right back at 10-5. Both teams couldn’t miss in the first half as Falkville made it a 17-16 game almost midway through the first half, but neither could Tanner Malin as he drilled back-to-back threes to increase the Raider lead to 23-16.

Later in the first half, baskets by Weston Hancock and Cone made it 29-23, but the Blue Devils quickly cut the Good Hope lead to two on back-to-back baskets down low. A layup by Barnette pushed the lead back to four, then Malin drilled yet another three to end the first half as the Raiders went into the half up, 34-27.

Falkville drilled a three to start out the second half as they cut it to four, but it would be all Good Hope after that as they went on a 22-0 run and their defense forced several turnovers and tough shots to help them start to pull away. Back-to-back layups by Tucker Malin made it a 56-30 game and the Raiders ended up rolling past the Blue Devils, 70-39.

Tanner Malin led the way for Good Hope with 29 points as he ended up hitting seven threes in the contest. Tucker Malin and Hancock each added eight points. Barnette ended up with seven points and Cone added six points.

Good Hope 64 – Cordova 14 (Varsity Girls)

The Lady Raiders got off to a fast start in this one and didn’t slow down for most of the first half. A three-pointer from Rudi Derrick and a layup by Bailey Tetro made it 5-0 right out of the gate and another basket from Derrick, followed by a three from Heather Tetro, made it a 10-0 game with just a couple minutes off the clock. Bailey Tetro knocked down a jumper to add to the lead and back to back layups from Derrick and Heather Tetro stretched the lead to 16-0 with just under 16 minutes to play in the opening half.

Baskets by Ivey Maddox and Charly Johnson kept the run going for Good Hope, making it a 20-0 game and after Cordova finally got on the board with a three of its own, Renee McLeod responded with a basket on the other end to make it 22-3. Johnson and McLeod scored the next six points for the Lady Raiders until Maddox made back to back baskets to extend the lead 32-6 with seven minutes remaining in the half. Two more baskets by Johnson added to the lead and after Kyndall Seal drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it a 39-6 game, McLeod scored in the final seconds of the half to give Good Hope a 41-6 advantage at the break.

Derrick and McLeod scored a pair of baskets to keep the Lady Raiders in front 45-10 early in the second half and they each scored again later in the period to make it 50-10 with less than 10 minutes to play. A Desiree Odachowksi layup stretched the lead to 52-10 and Maddox drained a three to make it 55-10. McLeod scored two more buckets inside to give Good Hope a 61-14 lead and Bailey Tetro scored the final basket of the game in the final seconds to wrap up a 64-14 win for the Lady Raiders.

McLeod led Good Hope with 16 points in the win, followed by Derrick with 13, Johnson with 10, Maddox with nine, Bailey Tetro with six, Heather Tetro with five, Seal with three and Odachowski with two.

The Lady Raiders will play Falkville this afternoon at 4:55 p.m.

Fayette County 49 – Good Hope 47 (Varsity Boys)

After hammering Falkville in their first game of the day, the Raiders had a little more trouble getting points on the board against Fayette County. Good Hope fell behind 7-0 early before a Noah Barnette basket cut the lead to five with just over 16 minutes to play in the first half. Back to back layups from Charlie O’Neil trimmed the lead to 7-6 but the Tigers answered and moved back in front 13-6. A three-pointer from Tyler Cone cut into the lead and another basket from Barnette made it a 13-11 game with 10 minutes remaining in the period.

However, the Raiders weren’t able to sustain much on the offensive end and Fayette County pulled back ahead 19-11 with five minutes left in the half. Tucker Malin knocked down a three with less than two minutes on the clock to trim the lead to 23-14 and back to back layups from Tucker and Canaan Jones made it a 23-18 game with 14 seconds in the half. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to drill a three-pointer just before the buzzer and took a 26-18 lead into the halftime break.

Good Hope came out of halftime with a little more energy and cut the lead to five early. Tanner Malin drilled a three to make it 31-26 and K’mal Bell laid one in to bring the Raiders within three. Tanner Malin turned a steal into an easy layup and trimmed the lead to 31-30 but the Tigers responded with five straight to move back in front 36-30. Barnette scored through a foul to cut the lead to three and an O’Neil basket made it a 1-point game but a 7-0 run from Fayette County made it a 43-35 game with around 11 minutes to play in the game.

Another Barnette basket and a pair of scores from Tanner Malin trimmed the lead to 43-41 with just over six minutes remaining but the Tigers were able to move back out in front 47-44 with less than three minutes to play. Barnette drained a three with four seconds on the clock to make it a 2-point game, but the Raiders couldn’t come any closer than that and Fayette County held on to win it 49-47.

Good Hope will be back in action at home Thursday for more summer games.
