HANCEVILLE, Ala.- “Food that touches the soul.” That’s how the owner of Merriweather’s Soul Food describes what you can expect at their new restaurant located inside the Joann Walls Center on Bangor Street in Hanceville. The meat and three style eatery has generated quite the buzz since opening on Easter Sunday.

“Food has always been a part of our family and when we saw that the building was empty, we decided that was the perfect opportunity. It was God’s calling and we felt that Hanceville needed something like this–something different,” said owner Kierra Merriweather.

Merriweather is a 2019 Hanceville High School graduate and is currently studying at Wallace State Community College to be a physical therapy assistant. Despite already being busy as a full-time student, she now gets up and starts cooking alongside her three siblings at 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Currently Merriweather’s Soul Food is open on Saturday and Sunday, but the plan is to add additional days of operation in the near future. This Saturday, breakfast will be served for the first time beginning at 6 a.m. Menu items will be biscuits, gravy, bacon, sausage, waffles, pancakes and more. Lunch is served from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The lunch menu varies day to day. Merriweather explained, “It depends on what the people want. Somebody will come in and request something. We try to get it in to make our customers happy.” The most popular lunch menu item has been Merriweather’s chicken and dressing and the beef tips with rice.

The recipes the Merriweather’s use are recipes passed down through the family including their mom and grandmother. Bring your appetite because Merriweather’s does not skimp at all. “We try to give out a good amount of portions too,” Merriweather added. “People are requesting that we get a bigger place and we are working on it, but you have to crawl before you walk. We will eventually get there.”
