HANCEVILLE, Ala.- The Hanceville City Council Thursday approved just over $6,000 in expenses due to an unforeseen issue Public Works encountered on Commercial Street. Public Works Director Rusty Fields explained that crews working on the Commercial Street gutter and resurfacing project discovered old terracotta drainage pipe that was in dire need of replacement.
Mayor Kenneth Nail explained to the council, “When we started getting into the drainage on Commercial Street, the old pipe was terracotta. The terracotta was all in pieces and halfway filled with dirt and it just wasn’t working properly.” Public Works ended up taking out 572 feet of terracotta pipe.
Hanceville Public Works has also been hard at work replacing the Styles Street bridge that was damaged beyond repair during recent flooding. Crews weren’t expecting to begin work on the bridge until June, but with cooperating weather, Fields and his crew were able to start earlier.
In other business, the council took the following actions:
- Issued a parade permit to the Cullman County Wranglers for a Jeep Parade schedule for May 8,2021.
- Proclamation declaring April Fair Housing Month
- Authorized Mayor Nail to enter into an agreement with Architect Tim Burney to develop drawings for the proposed expansion at the Hanceville City Jail.
- Approved the vacation of a street in Angel Gate Subdivision. The road was planned but remains a non-existing road. The adjacent lots are owned by the same individual who petitioned the council to vacate the street.
The next scheduled council meeting has been changed to May 6, 2021 due to many members scheduled to be at a conference the following week. The meeting will start at 5:30 p.m.
