PREP BASEBALL: Warriors, Lady Warriors earn area wins over Lawrence Co.

WEST POINT, Ala. – Both West Point squads hosted Lawrence County in a pair of huge area matchups Tuesday night and both teams picked up a huge are win. The Warriors rolled past the Red Devils 10-4 and will have a chance secure to a playoff spot with a win Thursday night while The Lady Warriors picked up an 8-4 win over the Lady Red Devils to help their own postseason chances.

West Point 10 – Lawrence County 4 (Baseball)

West Point got off to a very quick start offensively as they loaded the bases with two outs. Isaac Hoffpauir and Chase Sibley each drew a walk to give them a 2-0 lead, then Aubry Cleghorn scored on a Lawrence County error and Caiden Rodgers drew another bases-loaded walk to put the Warriors up top by four after one inning. They added on to their lead in the second as Carter Thornton lined an RBI single to right field, Will Cochran scored on a passed ball, and Hoffpauir and Cade Simmons each hit an RBI single and the Warriors went into the top of the third up, 8-0.

The score would remain the same until the top of the sixth as the Red Devils got on the scoreboard on a pair of sacrifice flies, but West Point got those runs back in their half on a two-run single by Simmons. Three straight doubles by Lawrence County to lead off the seventh inning cut the Warrior lead to 10-4 and after a four-pitch walk, reliever Eli Folds quickly settled down and got the final three outs of the game as the Warriors kept its playoff hopes alive with a 10-4 win over the Red Devils.

Simmons led the way for West Point (16-14) with two hits and three RBIs, while Hoffpauir added a pair of hits and two RBIs. Thornton collected a hit and an RBI while Rodgers added an RBI in the game. The Warriors will have a rematch with the Red Devils in a doubleheader on the road on Thursday as they look to continue to keep their postseason hopes alive.

West Point 8, Lawrence County 4 (Softball)

Lawrence County got on the scoreboard first to start out the game as an RBI single gave them an early 1-0 lead, but West Point quickly answered in its half. Bethany Minck hit a leadoff double and an RBI bunt single by Lexi Shadix tied the game up at one. The Lady Warriors broke the tie in the bottom of the third inning as Shadix drew a one-out walk and Carlie Wilkins blasted a two-run home run over the right field fence to give them a 3-1 lead. West Point made it a 4-1 game on a leadoff home run by Braelee Quinn in the fourth. An error and two straight walks loaded the bases with one out and Wilkins drew a walk to bring home Bethany Minck, then Sydney Sellers hit a two-run single to left field to give the Lady Warriors a 7-1 advantage going into the fifth inning. 

The Lady Red Devils made things interesting in the top of the fifth on a two-run double and they added another run on a West Point error to cut the deficit to three at 7-4, but West Point added another run in their half of the fifth on a Bethany Minck RBI single. Wilkins kept Lawrence County off the scoreboard the rest of the way as the Lady Warriors picked up a huge area win over the Lady Red Devils, 8-4, as they inch closer and closer to winning an area title.

Wilkins finished with two hits and three RBIs for West Point (15-14-2). Sellers added a hit and two RBIs. Bethany Minck and Quinn each added a pair of hits and an RBI and Shadix collected a hit and an RBI. The Lady Warriors will travel to take on Lawrence County in a doubleheader on Thursday.
