GOOD HOPE, Ala. — After finishing as runners-up in the West Morgan Christmas Classic, both Good Hope squads looked to start 2021 strong as they returned home to host Curry in area play. The Lady Raiders rolled past the Lady Yellow Jackets 60-23 while the Raiders pulled away late in the fourth quarter to get past the Yellow Jackets 69-51.

Good Hope 60 – Curry 23 (varsity girls)

Good Hope didn’t waste any time getting off to a quick start, scoring the first 16 points of the contest before Curry scored its first basket of the quarter and the Lady Raiders went into the second period up 16-2. The Lady Yellow Jackets made it 17-5 on a three, but Rudi Derrick and Heather Tetro scored the next 11 points for Good Hope, including a trio of treys, as the Lady Raiders pushed its lead to 28-5. Ivey Maddox later added another one from long range as Good Hope went into the half up 35-10.

The Lady Raiders pushed its lead to 46-16 after six straight points from Maddox and Derrick and they took a 48-19 lead into the final period, which was run under a hot clock. Good Hope improved to 12-6 and 1-1 in Class 4A, Region 11, as they rolled past Curry, 60-23.

Derrick led the way for Good Hope with 19 points and six steals. Maddox wasn’t too far behind with 18 points, three steals, and three blocks. Bailey Tetro ended up with 13 points and eight steals. Heather Tetro added nine points and four steals while Charly Johnson chipped in with a point and seven rebounds.

Good Hope 69 – Curry 51 (varsity boys)

Good Hope got off to a slow start, falling behind 5-0 and Tanner Malin went to the bench after picking up two early fouls. The Raiders quickly righted the shift as Charlie O’Neill, Noah Barnette and Lawton Farr each hit a layup to give them a 6-5 lead. After the Yellow Jackets got the lead right back at 7-6, Farr scored seven in a row to give Good Hope a 13-7 advantage. Curry got the final basket of the quarter to make it a 13-9 game after one.

A Farr layup, followed by an O’Neill trey from the left corner, stretched the Raider lead to 18-9 with 5:55 remaining in the second period, but six in a row by the Yellow Jackets made it a three-point game. Good Hope got back on track as Colton Lindsey and K’mal Bell each hit a three to push the lead to 24-17 and they took a 26-19 lead into the locker room.

Baskets by Noah Barnette and Farr gave the Raiders a 32-23 lead, but they couldn’t shake a pesky, gritty Curry squad as they went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 32. A Barnette basket down low, later followed by an O’Neill trey, gave Good Hope a 41-37 lead, but the Yellow Jackets kept battling back as they went on an 8-3 run to close the quarter and the Raiders went into the final period trailing 45-44.

Tanner Malin scored the first six points for Good Hope as the Raiders took the lead right back and that was just the start of a huge quarter for him. Curry hit a pair from the line to make it a one-point game with six minutes remaining in the contest, but it would be all Good Hope after that as Malin wound up scoring 16 points in the fourth and Bell added a pair of treys to help the Raiders outscore the Yellow Jackets 19-2 the rest of the way and they wound up winning the game 69-51.

Malin (five steals) and Farr (six rebounds) each finished with 19 points for Good Hope (11-4, 1-1), while Bell and Barnette each added nine. O’Neill ended up with eight points and Lindsey finished with five points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Good Hope will travel to take on Hanceville Friday night in another area matchup.
