Mrs. Gearldine Fanning, 78, of Hanceville peacefully passed away Friday evening, Dec. 11, 2020 at her residence.

She was born April 28, 1942 in Cullman County, a daughter of the late William Alexander Young and DesDecsie Mae Ballard Young.

Gearldine was preceded in death by her sisters Gwen Johns, Elaine Abbott, Nell Jo Jordan, Juanita Blanchard, Milo Lane, Naomi Gunterson and Betty Beasley; and brothers Jimmy Young, Paul Young, Earl Young, and WA Young.

Gearldine is survived by her husband of 55 years, Billy Ray Fanning (“Cotton”) and their children, daughter Sherry Fanning McClure and son-in-law Dewayne McClure, and son Ricky Allen Fanning “Rick.” She is also survived by her brother Doyle Young “DC” (Rose) and her grandchildren Kaylee Hasting, Dean Fanning, MaLeah Hunt, Meagan Yarbrough (Kevin), Warren Fanning, Nathan Fanning, Jonathan Fanning, LeAnn Miller, and Josh McClure (Brianna). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Paxleigh, Landon, Charlee, Preston, and Savanna. She leaves a host of nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends who will miss her tremendously.

Gearldine and Cotton had a beautiful life together and were happiest spending time with one another, while making connections with others everywhere they went. While they were still able, they enjoyed simply going to town for dinner and coffee. Their favorite place to vacation was the mountains, whether it was just the two of them or with family. She was an amazing mother and granny, always putting her “babies” first. Many years ago, she was a devoted caregiver to her mother (“Momma Young”) and unknowingly inspired her own daughter to selflessly become her caregiver for her last year of life. Her granddaughter, Kaylee Hasting, was also her adoring and devoted caregiver along with dear family friends, Lisa Wiley and Ann Gaines. She has left a lasting impression on so many and has positively shaped the lives of her entire family. In the words of her husband, “She was a good woman, and we hate to see her go.” Life will not be the same without her, but we will all strive to leave a legacy of love, like she did, while cherishing the memories.

Visitation is from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020 at Hanceville Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020 at Hanceville Funeral Home, with Brother Paul Rivers officiating. Her beloved son-in-law Dewayne McClure will provide a eulogy. A special song will be presented by Dennis McClure. Burial will follow in the Fairview West Cemetery.
