PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders down Cordova 79-73, Lady Raiders crush Lady Blue Devils 80-17

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Good Hope returned home Monday night after the Thanksgiving break and welcomed Cordova onto campus for a pair of varsity matchups. The Lady Raiders were all over the Lady Blue Devils and led the game 47-0 at one point on their way to an 80-17 victory while the Raiders remained unbeaten with a 79-73 win over Cordova.

Good Hope 80 – Cordova 17 (varsity girls)

The Lady Raiders took any potential drama out of this matchup almost immediately with a huge opening half against Cordova. Back to back buckets by Rudi Derrick gave Good Hope an early 4-0 lead and the press from the Lady Raiders led to a lot of turnovers and easy baskets. Kyndall Seal and Ivey Maddox each scored to make it 8-0 early in the first and two more buckets from Derrick and Maddox stretched the lead to 14-0 midway through the quarter.

Two more baskets by Derrick and Maddox made it a 20-0 game with three minutes in the first and Seal and Heather Tetro each added buckets to extend the lead to 24-0. A Renee McLeod shot made it 26-0 and back to back Bailey Tetro baskets gave Good Hope a 30-0 advantage in the first. McLeod got another jumper to fall in the final seconds of the period to give the Lady Raiders a 32-0 lead at the start of the second.

Derrick knocked down a three to put Good Hope in front 35-0 at the start of the second and Desire’ Odachowski laid one in to make it 37-0. Derrick nailed another shot from long range to add to the growing lead and Maddox turned a block into an easy layup to make it a 42-0 game with five minutes remaining in the half. McLeod buried another shot and Maddox added another three to extend the lead to 47-0 midway through the second quarter. The Lady Blue Devils were finally able to get on the board on their next possession, but the Lady Raiders didn’t let up. Another McLeod bucket followed by a trey from Maddie McKenney made it a 52-4 game with just over a minute to play in the half and Good Hope went into the locker room with a 53-7 advantage at the break.

Back to back baskets by McLeod kept the momentum going and kept the Lady Raiders in front 57-9 at the start of the third. A Bailey Keef basket made it 61-9 early in the third and Charly Johnson got a shot to fall to extend the lead to 65-9 midway through the quarter. Derrick laid another one in to make it 67-11 with just over two minutes to play in the period and an Odachowksi three put Good Hope on top 70-11. The Lady Raiders led the way 74-11 at the start of the final frame.

McLeod added five more quick points at the start of the fourth quarter to keep Good Hope in front 79-11 at the start of the fourth quarter and with the hot clock running, the Lady Raiders pulled away to defeat Cordova convincingly, 80-17.

Derrick the Lady Raiders with 20 points in the win, followed by McLeod with 18, Maddox with 17 and Odachowski with five. Good Hope improves to 3-2 with the win and will travel to take on Fultondale Friday.

Good Hope 79 – Cordova 73 (varsity boys)

Michael Owens gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead before the game even began by knocking down a pair of technical foul free throws after a Cordova infraction during warm-ups but the Blue Devils drilled a three-pointer to retake an early, 3-2 lead. Colton Lindsey buried a trey to give Good Hope a 5-3 advantage, but the Blue Devils were able to pull back ahead 6-5 midway through the period.

A Noah Barnette basket cut the lead to 10-7 midway through the opening quarter and Barnette added a three-pointer to trim the lead to 12-10 with just under three minutes to play in the first. A Lawton Farr jumper tied things up at 12 late in the first quarter and Tanner Malin buried a triple to put the Raiders in front 15-12 with less than a minute to play in the quarter. Malin laid another in for two more just before the buzzer to make it a 17-12 game at the end of the first.

Barnette knocked down another trey at the start of the second to put Good Hope in front 20-12 but the Blue Devils were able to cut it to 20-17 as the period went on. Malin scored inside to stretch the lead to 22-17 midway through the quarter and he converted a three-point play at the line to make it a 25-17 game. The Raiders continued to create some separation when goaltending was called on a Barnette shot to make it 28-17 and a three-pointer from Charlie O’Neil stretched the lead to 31-20 with less than two minutes remaining in the half. A Malin jumper made it a 33-21 game with around a minute to play in the half but the Blue Devils were able to get on the board one more time to trim the lead to 33-23 at the halftime break.

Another Barnette bucket kept Good Hope in front 35-25 at the start of the third quarter and five straight points by Farr stretched the lead to 40-28 as the quarter progressed. Another Malin basket put the Raiders in front 42-28 midway through the third and after a couple of Cordova buckets, Farr drilled another three to make it a 45-32 game. Barnette drove to the basket for two more points to stretch the lead to 47-35 with just under three minutes remaining in the third but the Blue Devils responded with a trey on the other end to make it 47-38. A three-pointer from Eli Pugh gave the Raiders a 52-38 advantage with just over a minute to play in the third quarter and Malin converted another three-point play at the line to make it 55-42 late in the period. A scoring run from Cordova at the end of the period cut the lead to 55-47 going into the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils were able to make it a 4-point game early in the final frame, but a pair of K’mal Bell free throws put the Raiders back in front 57-51. Bell followed his free throws with a layup on the next possession to keep Good Hope in front 59-53 and Malin turned a steal into two more easy points to make it a 61-53 game with just over five minutes to play. Another and-one play by Malin kept the scoring run going and put the Raiders on top 64-53 and the junior point guard laid in another one to stretch the lead to 13 midway through the fourth. Barnette put one off the glass to make it a 68-55 game and Malin finished off yet another three-point play at the free throw line to maintain a 71-59 Good Hope lead with just over two minutes to play. A pair of Malin free throws gave the Raiders a 73-65 advantage with a minute remaining on the clock and Barnette laid one in to stretch the lead to 10 late in the game. Cordova continued to fight back but ran out of time and Good Hope held on to defeat the Blue Devils 79-73.

Malin led the Raiders with 29 points in the win, followed by Barnette with 20 and Farr with 14. The Raiders improve to 4-0 on the season with the win and will travel to play Fultondale Friday night.
