CULLMAN, Ala.Cullman County added a record 65 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health, with 2,404 cases confirmed across the county since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those, 701 were confirmed in just the last 14 days.

Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs on Friday addressed the sharp increase in the number of cases confirmed in the county in the last two weeks.

“There’s no question that this is a second, powerful wave of this virus,” he said. “It’s very hard to wrap your head around everything we’ve been through. There are numerous families that have lost loved ones to this virus, and the hardest part about that is just how unpredictable and helpless it leaves families. It’s heartbreaking for a family to go through this, especially from a distance.

“There are a lot more cases where people have recovered, and that’s wonderful; however, the tough part we often don’t hear of is the aftermath- the amount of time it takes the body to get back to full strength.

“I think our biggest obstacle is maintaining the mindset to take it serious even when it does not affect us or our families.

“The bottom line is that there is no vaccine yet, there is no undisputed treatment yet, but there is hope in the fact that if we can realize the severity of the moment, adhere to the guidelines and take the precautions, then we can at least slow it down from this rapid re-emergence.

“It’s not worth chancing. That’s what I want people to know. It’s not worth looking back and asking, ‘What if?’ It has to be an educated commitment to do better. When you’re trying to beat something and win, it takes every member of the team to buy in, and that’s what we need- an all-in Cullman.”
