WEST POINT, Ala. – Everyone had a feeling this year’s 5A, Area 14 Tournament would come down to Fairview and West Point and that turned out to be the case Wednesday night. The Lady Warriors downed Brewer 3-1 and Fairview edged Guntersville in a five-set thriller to set up a rematch of this year’s Cullman County Championship showdown. West Point took down the Lady Aggies in that title bout but this time around, it was Fairview that came out on top with a sweep. As a result, the Lady Aggies have earned the chance to host the sub-regional tournament on their home floor this Saturday.
Fairview 3 – West Point 0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-19)
The Lady Aggies held a 16-12 advantage midway through the first set of the area tournament finals, but West Point was able to close the gap and cut the deficit to 19-17 before eventually tying things up at 20. However, Fairview dominated the final moments of the first set and pulled away to win it 25-21, taking a 1-0 lead in the championship match.
Fairview got off to another fast start in the next set, taking a 3-0 lead and stretching it to 9-3 as the set went on. The Lady Aggies pulled ahead 13-6 midway through the set and the scoring run continued. Fairview eventually moved ahead 18-8 but the Lady Warriors didn’t quit, and managed to trim the lead to 24-19 at one point but the Lady Aggies picked up the last point they needed to take the second set 25-19 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The score was knotted at 3 and then again at 6 early in the third match before Fairview managed to create any separation. The Lady Aggies eventually found themselves in front 10-7 and they added to their lead to make it 15-10 midway through the set. A 4-0 scoring run from Fairview made it 19-10 and began to put things out of reach for West Point. The Lady Warriors once again found a scoring surge late in the set but it wasn’t enough to over the Fairview lead and the Lady Aggies held on to win it 25-19 to complete the sweep of West Point and capture this year’s 5A, Area 14 Tournament crown.
Micah Means posted 28 assists, six blocks, two digs and a kill and Daisy Manasco added 14 kills, six digs, three aces and a block for Fairview in the win.
