PREP VOLLEYBALL: Addison sweeps Cold Springs, Hatton to win 2A, Area 13 Tournament

ADDISON, Ala. – Addison will advance and host a sub-regional tournament at Stephenson Gymnasium Friday after the Lady Bulldogs knocked off both Cold Springs and Hatton to win this year’s 2A, Area 13 Tournament. Addison swept both the Lady Eagles and Lady Hornets to secure the area crown.

Addison 3 – Cold Springs 0 (25-4, 25-5, 25-14)

After jumping out to an early lead and dominating the first set against Cold Springs 25-4, the Lady Bulldogs generated another fast start in the second set. Addison built a 7-2 at the start the grew to 11-4 midway through the set. A 7-1 scoring run stretched the lead to 18-5 and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away to take the second set 25-5.

The third set was the tightest of the afternoon between the two teams. The score was knotted at 4 early but Addison managed to pull ahead and take an 8-6 lead. The Lady Bulldogs added to their lead, making it 12-7 midway through the set before using a 9-1 scoring run to take a 21-9 lead. Cold Springs wouldn’t go down easily and managed to cut into the deficit, but it wasn’t enough, and Addison won the third set 25-14 to complete the sweep and advance to the area tournament finals.

Gracie Manley posted four aces, two kills and a pair of digs in the win while senior Sunny Snoddy added three aces and a team-high 11 kills. Addisyn Smothers posted a pair of aces, seven kills and three digs, Hadley Butler finished with two aces and a dig and Abby Waldrep racked up seven kills for the Lady Bulldogs.

Addison 3 – Hatton 0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-13)

The area tournament finals more of the same for Addison. The Lady Bulldogs held a slim, 5-3 lead early in the first set but began to create separation and built a 10-4 lead. The run continued and Addison pulled ahead 17-5 before running away with the opening set 25-9.

The Lady Bulldogs had even less trouble with Hatton in the second set, going on top 10-3 early before taking a 15-4 lead midway through the set. A 10-0 run gave Addison a 25-4 win in the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Once again, the third set of the match was the most competitive for the Lady Bulldogs. They led the way 13-6 midway through the set and used a 6-2 run to create a 19-8 lead. The Lady Hornets continued to fight back but they couldn’t overcome Addison on its home floor and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away to take the third set 25-13 and sweep the area tournament to advance to the sub-regionals.

Manley added another five aces in the match against Hatton to go along with four kills and two blocks. Smothers racked up a team-high 11 kills, four blocks and an ace in the win. Butler recorded five digs and Bailee Ory and Molly Gilbreath each finished with four. Waldrep finished with another four kills and three blocks for Addison.

The Lady Bulldogs will be back home Friday night to host a sub-regional tournament.
