PREP FOOTBALL: Meek falls to Winston County in home opener

ARLEY, Ala. – Winston County’s offense erupted Thursday night at county rival Meek. The Yellow Jackets got four touchdowns from Austin Owens and scored 40 first-half points on their way to a 64-14 win over the Tigers at Meek Field.

Owens had three touchdowns on the scoreboard just six-and-a-half minutes into the game as Winston County seized control from the opening kickoff. Owens finished with 116 yards and three rushing touchdowns on nine carries and he added a fumble return for a score.

Winston County grabbed an early 8-0 lead after an Owens 3-yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion. He added a 65-yard touchdown run with 7:20 left in the opening quarter and followed with a 62-yard fumble return for a touchdown as Winston County pushed its lead to 20-0 with 5:24 on the clock.

After Meek got on the board with a Matthew Clark 4-yard run, Winston County countered with three more scores. Ryker Morgan hit Ethan Morgan on a 37-yard touchdown pass. Ryker Morgan added an 11-yard touchdown run and Brooks Bonds scored from 15 yards out for a 40-6 lead with 3:11 left in the half.

Ryker Morgan finished with 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground on seven carries. He was also 1 for 1 passing for 37 yards and a score.

Owens added his final touchdown, a 20-yard run, with 7:42 left in the third quarter. After Clark added Meek’s second touchdown, this one on another four-yard run, to cut the gap to 48-14, Winston County added two more scores.

Kan Moon had both touchdowns, scoring on runs of 40 and 8 yards. Moon finished with 92 yards and two scores on six carries. For Meek, Clark led the way, picking up 67 yards and both Tiger touchdowns on 14 carries.

Meek will be back on the road next week to take on Brilliant.
