FAIRVIEW, Ala. – After putting together an impressive postseason run a season ago and capturing a region title, the Fairview Aggies are ready to hit the field again this fall to build on that success going into Class 5A. The Aggies are moving up from 4A and into a new region, bringing with it a host of new obstacles for the purple and gold to overcome. Head Coach George Redding is about to kick off his 14th season at Fairview and he’s happy to report a successful fall camp for the Aggies as they prepare to get the new year underway.

“Fall camp has been good. The energy has been good, the intensity level has been good, and guys have really come in and brought a good attitude of working and getting better. So, we’ve been very pleased with that and we’ve had a huge focus on doing things better at a high level, not just getting it done, but doing it at a high level,” Redding said. “I feel like our coaches have done a good job of working really hard to build more depth. We feel like that will be one of the keys for us to try and be competitive in 5A is to try to get more guys ready for Friday nights.”

There are several standouts from the 2019 squad returning to Fairview this fall and Redding says having that experience in fall camp has helped the Aggies hit the ground running and build on what they learned last year.

“That’s really helped us. I think as far as the knowledge base, the guys are coming back with a decent understanding of what we try to do, what we want to do and how we want to do it,” Redding said. “So, now it’s just about continuing to work to get better, get faster, get more efficient and all that kind of stuff so we have been able to continue building on the knowledge that these guys are bringing from last season.”

Fairview does have an experienced roster preparing to kick things off this fall, but Redding knows last year’s success isn’t worth anything once the lights come on. The Aggies would love to build on some of that momentum from last year’s playoff run but Redding is also excited to see what else this year’s team is capable of.

“You know last season was an exciting season and it was very good to get our school back into the playoffs because we had missed them for a while there and it was good to get back but it’s a whole new team now with a whole new culture,” Redding said. “So, we’ve got to start from square one and just find a way to get back in. Everything from last year was great but it’s a new year so you’ve got to let that one go and we’ll see what this year’s team can accomplish.”

The coronavirus pandemic has been a unique challenge for teams across the state and the country and Redding wants his team to make the best of an odd situation. Now more than ever, local athletes understand that their seasons can end at any moment and the Aggies are using that perspective to get the most out of every day they get on the field this year.

“Our focus this year has been to embrace it and to do that you have to accept it and find a way to appreciate it. Every day we’re trying to come in with that kind of attitude and that’s what has to be done for us to protect our season and protect our teammates. So, it’s just something that we’ve accepted, and I think the guys have done a really good job with that,” Redding said. “I think every day we get up and you look at social media and there are teams having to cancel and teams having to shut down so it makes you appreciate the day that you’ve got today and that’s been our attitude. We’re going to stick with that because today we get to go at it and we’re grateful for that and we’re going to try to get as much out of it as we can.”

The Fairview Aggies were originally scheduled to open the season at D.A.R. but will now travel to Falkville for a jamboree game Friday night.
